The design consists of three narrow strips on either side of a wide band; the band is composed of seven ribbons featuring vine scrolls, guilloche patterns, and interlaced cartouches that terminate with a medallion. The medallion, filled with a pattern of overlapping leaflike shapes and tiny palmettes, is framed by a stylized inscription bearing the word "Allah" repeated in red. (166.05 × 49.21 cm) (mount, without roller), Ink on paper, Japan, 16th century, This pair of hanging scrolls juxtaposes birds associated with spring and autumn: at right a bulbul on a plum tree in full bloom (spring) and at left a family of wild geese on a beach near drying reeds (autumn). The bulbul and one of the geese appear to call out to one another, an indication that these hanging scrolls once flanked a central devotional image of a Buddhist deity or patriarch. Although each painting is impressed with the seals of the second-generation Kano leader Motonobu (1476-1559), they were probably painted by a Kano painter active a generation or two after the masters death and working in his style. The anonymous painter may even have used Motonobus sketches as a reference. Generations of Kano painters looked to the works of earlier painters, especially Motonob

End of the Harvest, 1890s. Charles Angrand (French, 1854-1926). Conté crayon; sheet: 48.8 x 63.5 cm (19 3/16 x 25 in.). This drawing's unusual technique reflects the ideas of the French painting movement known as Pointillism or Divisionism. Its most famous practitioner, Georges Seurat (1859-1891), developed a technique of applying color in short strokes or dots. Seurat's friend Charles Angrand was influenced by this method, and both artists developed a related technique for their drawings. In the sheet shown here, Angrand used a black, manufactured charcoal stick on a paper textured with tiny ridges. The highest of these ridges hold the charcoal, but the paper shows through in the small spaces between them. This creates the effect of a soft, diffuse evening light that dissolves the curved shapes of haystacks and turns the landscape into an expansive abstraction of nature.
