Surrounding the two SPHERES mini-satellites is ring-shaped hardware known as the Resonant Inductive Near-field Generation System, or RINGS. SPHERES-RINGS seeks to demonstrate wireless power transfer between satellites at a distance for enhanced operations.

Results from ACE will help researchers understand how to optimize stabilizers to extend the shelf life of products like laundry detergent, paint, ketchup and even salad dressing.

The FLUIDICS investigation evaluates the Center of Mass (CoM) position regarding a temperature gradient on a representation of a fuel tank. The observation of capillary wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid layer in a low-gravity environment can provide insights into measuring the existing volume in a sphere.

This STS-98 mission photograph shows astronauts Thomas D. Jones (foreground) and Kerneth D. Cockrell floating inside the newly installed Laboratory aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The American-made Destiny module is the cornerstone for space-based research aboard the orbiting platform and the centerpiece of the ISS, where unprecedented science experiments will be performed in the near-zero gravity of space. Destiny will also serve as the command and control center for the ISS. The aluminum module is 8.5-meters (28-feet) long and 4.3-meters (14-feet) in diameter. The laboratory consists of three cylindrical sections and two endcones with hatches that will be mated to other station components. A 50.9-centimeter (20-inch-) diameter window is located on one side of the center module segment. This pressurized module is designed to accommodate pressurized payloads. The Tomatosphere 5 investigation consists of a shipment of 1.2 million tomato seeds to the International Space Station (ISS), where they visit for a short while aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft before returning to Earth. Approximately 15 000 students in schools across Canada and the United States receive the space-flown seeds, as well as seeds that remained on Earth, and grow both types in a blind study that measures their germination, growth rate, and general vigor.

The SPHERES-Slosh investigation uses small robotic satellites on the space station to examine how liquids move around inside containers in microgravity.

The objective of The Effect of Long Duration Hypogravity on the Perception of Self-Motion (VECTION) study is to determine to what extent an astronaut's ability to visually interpret motion, orientation, and distance may be disrupted in a microgravity environment, and how it may adapt, and how it may be changed upon return to Earth. Multiple experimental time points inflight and upon return to Earth allows for the adaptation and recovery process to be investigated.

ISS035-E-010761 (29 March 2013) --- Expedition 35 Commander Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency, whose stretched-out arm can be seen at upper left, was expecting to see NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy float into this scene in the Poisk or Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), but he might have been somewhat surprised to see the exaggerated mustache which Cassidy was sporting. Cosmonaut and Expedition 35 Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko is at right. Cassidy and two crewmates had earlier arrived at the orbital outpost by way of the Soyuz TMA-08M spacecraft. One would imagine that Hadfield, who has a real mustache, likely checked out the one on Cassidy.

ISS012-E-05983 (23 Oct. 2005) --- Astronaut William S. McArthur Jr. (right), Expedition 12 commander and NASA science officer, dons his Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit in the Quest Airlock of the international space station. Cosmonaut Valery I. Tokarev, flight engineer representing Russia's Federal Space Agency, assisted McArthur. When the Expedition 12 crew performs its first scheduled day of spacewalking on Nov. 7, it will be attired in the NASA EMU.

ISS018-E-040992 (18 March 2009) --- Cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov, Expedition 18 flight engineer, works with the European Matroshka-R Phantom experiment in the Zvezda Service Module of the International Space Station while Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-119) remains docked with the station. Matroshka, the name for the traditional Russian set of nestling dolls, is an antroph-amorphous model of a human torso designed for radiation studies.

ISS037-E-004950 (2 Oct. 2013) --- European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, Expedition 37 flight engineer, performs an oxygen uptake measurement session in the Columbus laboratory of the International Space Station. He is wearing a Pulmonary Function System (PFS) face mask during the session.

ISS031-E-149757 (28 June 2012) --- NASA astronaut Joe Acaba, Expedition 31 flight engineer, uses a computer while working with extravehicular activity (EVA) tools in the Quest airlock of the International Space Station.

ISS020-E-023823 (24 July 2009) --- Astronauts Dave Wolf (foreground with back to camera) and Mike Barratt assist astronaut Tom Marshburn with his extravehicular mobility unit spacesuit in the joint airlock, while astronaut Christopher Cassidy (almost out of frame at right) gets ready to join him. Marshburn and Cassidy were about to participate in the July 24 flight day 10 spacewalk. They are scheduled to wrap up the EVA work with a fifth overall session on July 27. The three STS-127 mission specialists and station flight engineer are part of a 13-member aggregation of astronauts and cosmonauts currently onboard the orbital outpost while its crew of six plays host to Endeavour's crew of seven.
