Astronaut Scott Kelly initiated VEG-01 B, the second crop of lettuce, on July, 8, 2015, and both Kelly and Astronaut Kjell Lindgren cared for the plants. The crop grew for 33 days. VEG-01 B included one set of six plant pillows planted with red romaine lettuce seeds. On Aug. 10, 2015, the crew harvested and consumed leaves from each plant. This was the first crop grown and consumed in NASA hardware. They harvested the rest of the plant tissue and froze it in the stations Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) for return to Earth for further study including microbial analysis, antioxidant capacity, mineral analysis and anthocyanin concentration.

Myotendinous and Neuromuscular Adaptation to Long-term Spaceflight (Sarcolab) investigates the adaptation and deterioration of the soleus, or calf muscle, where it joins the Achilles tendon, which links it to the heel and carries loads from the entire body. Muscle fiber samples are taken from crew members before and after flight, and analyzed for changes in structural and chemical properties.

iss059e101463 (6/12/2019) --- Photo documentation aboard the International Space Station (ISS) of the ACE Modules taken during the ACE-T10 Module Configuration. The Advanced Colloids Experiment-Temperature-10 (ACE-T-10) investigates the growth kinetics, microscopic dynamics, and restructuring processes in ordered and disordered structures such as colloidal crystals, glasses and gels. The investigation studies crystal nucleation in colloidal fluids, the origin of ageing in glasses and gels, as well as the heterogeneous nature of the microscopic dynamics in these structures. The study must be conducted in microgravity, as gravitational stresses affect the structure and growth of these solids from colloids.

STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. Fleet Survey Team (FST) Sailors and a Civilian conducted five hydrographic surveys of confirmed and unconfirmed submerged World War 2 (WWII) era aircrafts off the coast of Pensacola, Florida using a multi-beam echo sounder on behalf of Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC). The Team included LTJG Matthew Dullum (OIC) - VA Beach, VA, Mr. Ryan Harner (GS-9) - Mount Holly, NJ, LTJG Rocky Bowman - Columbus, OH, ENS Mark Viteri - Queens, NY, AG2 Steven Vehorn - Charleston, SC and LCDR Bobby Dixon, CNMOC PAO. FST, comprised of approximately 65 military and civilian members, is a rapid-response team with capabilities to conduct quick-turnaround hydrographic surveys anywhere in the world. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command directs and oversees more than 2,500 globally-distributed military and civilian personnel who collect, process and exploit environmental information to assist Fleet and Joint Commanders in all warfare areas to make better decision

Lunabotics Feature Photo. The New Mexico College of Mining and Technology robotic miner takes its first dig in the schools mining arena. More than 40 teams from around the U.S. participated in NASAs Lunabotics competition, which challenges collegiate teams to design and built remote-controlled robots under constraints similar to those the agency will face as it returns to the lunar surface through Artemis. The objective of the challenge is to see which teams robot can collect and deposit the most rocky regolith within a specified amount of time.

This chart describes the Skylab student experiment Motor Sensory Performance, proposed by Kathy L. Jackson of Houston, Texas. Her proposal was a very simple but effective test to measure the potential degradation of man's motor-sensory skills while weightless. Without knowing whether or not man can retain a high level of competency in the performance of various tasks after long exposure to weightlessness, this capability could not be fully known. Skylab, with its long-duration missions, provided an ideal testing situation. The experiment Kathy Jackson proposed was similar in application to the tasks involved in docking one spacecraft to another using manual control. It required one of the greatest tests of the motor-sensory capabilities of man. In March 1972, NASA and the National Science Teachers Association selected 25 experiment proposals for flight on Skylab. Science advisors from the Marshall Space Flight Center aided and assisted the students in developing the proposals for fligh
