Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

Sky Sketch (from Sketchbook VII). Artist: William Trost Richards (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1833-1905 Newport, Rhode Island). Dimensions: 5 x 7 1/2 in. (12.7 x 19.1 cm). Date: 1886.This sketchbook contains forty-six drawings in graphite and ink, primarily of New England landscape and marine subjects. The addition to the Museum's collection of this and one other sketchbook (1992.2.2) of Pacific Northwest landscape subjects by Richards virtually completes a representation of the range of the artist's graphic achievement. The books are remarkable for both highly finished compositions and for pages of rapid notes probably taken during strolls through the countryside. The pages testify to Richard's tireless pleasure in observing nature, to the sketchbooks utility as a rehearsal place for his hand, and to the vivid impressions he could produce with the simplest of means. Not least of all, they offer a key understanding to the artist's uncanny facility in his better known painting

Sketchbook George Henry Hall (American, 1825-1913). Sketchbook, various dates, 1852-1893. Graphite and opaque watercolor on cream, blue, beige, medium thick, slightly textured wove papers, Closed: 11 1/16 x 16 13/16 x 13/16 in. (28.1 x 42.7 x 2.1 cm). George Henry Halls large sketchbook contains highly finished images of locations in Italy and the northeastern United States, with the majority of pages devoted to his Italian travels in 1852. Since Hall is primarily known as a genre and still-life painter, this sketchbook provides a rare glimpse into his experiments with landscape composition. Executed naturalistically in graphite with accents of white watercolor, the drawings follow the picturesque landscape conventions established by the Hudson River School. These conventions include framing a distant panoramic vista with foreground trees or other vertical elements. American Art various dates, 1852-1893

Pierre Van Cortlandt American. Pierre Van Cortlandt, ca. 1731. Oil on linen, 57 x 41 9/16 in. (144.8 x 105.5 cm). The artist of these full-length portraits based the elaborate backdrops, and details such as the poses and the animals, on British royal portrait prints (see illustration) that decorated colonial homes. The pictorial link between the Van Cortlandt brothers, who were born into one of the citys wealthiest Dutch families, and British nobility suggested their great promise. Although information about John, who died in his twenties, is scarce, Pierre inherited vast properties north of Manhattan and became an ardent patriot during the Revolutionary War. Jonas Platt Samuel Finley Breese Morse (American, 1791-1872). Jonas Platt, 1828. Oil on canvas, 35 15/16 x 29 7/16 in. (91.3 x 74.8 cm). Samuel F.B. Morse was at the peak of his career when he portrayed Jonas Platt, who is presented as a soberly dressed man of affairs, with book and documents nearby, facing us in a confident yet thoughtful manner. The drapery and glimpse of sky are scaled-down elements drawn from grandmanner portraiture and signal Platt's prominence.The sitter and artist were both active in politics and concerned with the application of scientific and technological advances to national purpose. Platt had been an early promoter of the Erie Canal, and Morse was not only the finest portrait painter in New York, but an inventor as well. A decade after completing this work, Morse retired from his artistic career to devote himself to the development of the telegraph. American Art 1828
