Plymouth, Mass : 1882. Bird's-eye-view. Includes ill. and index to points of interest.. Most people remember Plymouth as the landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620 and as the first permanent English settlement in New England. However, this late 19th-century view documents an historic town that transformed itself from a small coastal port into an industrial town with a diversified base. As if recalling the Mayflower's approach from the sea across Cape Cod Bay, the artist views the town from the northeast looking inland toward the southwest. Using this perspective, he emphasizes not only the harbor and waterfront activities, but also centrally positions Town Brook, where six major industrial complexes were located (identified by the numbers 22-25, 29, 30). Reinforcing the importance of manufacturing to the town's livelihood, the artist also includes vignettes of six factories along the lower margin. Providence, R.I. Brid's-eye view. Includes ill. Indexed for points of interest.. In 1880 Providence had a population of almost 105,000, making it the 20th largest city in the United States. In this drawing, the city is viewed from the southeast, and focuses attention in the foreground and center on the harbor facilities along the Providence River and its junction with the Seekonk River. Meanwhile the train station located adjacent to an oval reservoir known as the Cove, is prominently positioned near the center of the map. Such an orientation suggests the importance of transportation and shipping to the city's economy. Although shipping was an important aspect of Providences economy during the colonial period, the city was one of the earliest in America to be industrialized. By the 1830s, the city's economy was dominated by several different types of manufacturing base metals and machinery, cotton and woolen textiles, and jewelry and silverware. Manufacturing center of Lynn, Mass : 1879. Bird's-eye view. Indexed for points of interest. "Population about 40,000.". This view was published by O.H. Bailey in 1879 and is very typical of his other bird's eye views. It provides a high elevation perspective of Lynn and views the town from the southeast, as if approaching from the sea. Although the city's waterfront is in the foreground, it does not appear very busy. However, the viewer's attention is drawn to the center part of the drawing where a large concentration of factories clusters along Central Street between Central and Park Squares. Incidentally, City Hall was located on the left-hand side of the drawing, which did not include that part of the town bordering Lynn Common, located just to the east (left) of Park Square. Until the last decade of the 19th century, Lynn was noted as the nation's leading producer of shoes, especially women's shoes. This reputation is confirmed by the legend identifying forty-one industries. Thirty

Haverhill, Massachusetts : 1893. Bird's-eye view. Includes ill. and index to points of interest.. Haverhill, located on the north side of the Merrimack River, is depicted from the south in this colorful bird's eye view. This composition focuses on the city's waterfront and central business district. Several larger factories, located near the railroad tracks and small tributary Little Rive rare positioned just left of center. However, the true nature of the city's industrial and commercial activity is captured in the marginal insets. Of the sixty-four vignettes, twenty-eight depicted boot, shoe, and slipper manufacturers while one portrayed a hat factory. Next to Lynn and Brockton, Haverhill was the state's third most important producer of footwear, primarily fine ladies shoes. The marginal insets, along with the legend's twenty-six entries, provide a more balanced image of the city's social and cultural life than many of the bird's eye views did for other industrial towns.
