Coast Guard Commander Wins Second Legion of Merit. Coast Guard Commander Ralph R. Curry (right) is presented a gold star, in lieu of a second Legion of Merit, by Captain W. K. Scammell, 8th District Coast Guard Officer, at New Orleans, La. Commander Curry, skipper of a Coast Guard-manned Destroyer Escort, was cited for "able leadership, prompt and decisive action" in destroying a Nazi submarine recently somewhere in the Atlantic. He had received his first Legion of Merit as commanding officer of a cutter which rescued survivors of a torpedoed transport in the North Atlantic. Commander Curry's wife and two small daughters live in Alexandria, Va.

The Thousandth U.S. Soldier To Marry A Japanese -- The 1,000th. marriage in Progress in progress at the U.S. consulate in Tokyo. Sgt. Donald Kipker of Lima, Ohio, wed Mosuko Sakurai of Tokyo. The two have been friends for three years. The fraternisation between American soldiers of the United States Occupation Forces in Japan and Japanese girls, has resulted in an amazing number of marriages. One of the reasons for the many East-West marriages is the Westernisation of the Japanese girls. The average girls now go to business and are copying, in many ways, American girls, includings ways of dress. The 1,000th. of such marriages was performed recently in the American Consulate in Tokyo. Wounded American Soldiers Of Japanese Descent Back From Battle -- Four wounded American soldiery of Japanese descent, back in the U.S. after fighting the Germans in Italy, talk over their battle experiences in a hotel room in New York City. All of them are from Hawaii and were members of the famed 100th U.S. Infantry Battalion, which is composed almost entirely of American boys whose families moved to the U.S. from Japan. They are (left to right, seated): Private Kenneth Otagaki, 27, who lost a leg in the battle for Cassino, and Captain Kiyoshi Kuramoto, who received undisclosed wounds. In the rear are: Technical Sergeant Robert Y. Oda, who lost an arm 6 and his right eye in a dynamite explosion in Rome, and Private First Class Tamotsu Shimitzu, who lost an arm on the Anzio beachhead. November 27, 1944.
