In January 1954, Collins joined the 21st Fighter-Bomber Wing at George Air Force Base, Calif., where he learned to deliver nuclear weapons in his F-86 Sabre jet. From 1959 to 1963, he was a test pilot for the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. Pattillo enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces in November 1942. During World War II, both flew with the Eighth Air Forces 352nd Fighter Group, protecting bombers and attacking ground targets. Maj. Gen. Pattillo flew 135 combat missions before being shot down and captured by the Germans. He remained a POW until the end of the war.Both were released from active duty following World War II but were later recalled in early 1948, serving with the 31st Fighter Group. Turkish Airmen assigned to the 10th Tanker Base Command standby for the commencement of the Atatürk Memorial Day ceremony at Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye, Nov. 10, 2022. In commemoration of the 84th anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the modern-day Republic of Türkiye, the 10th Tanker Base Command and the 39th Air Base Wing paid tribute to Atatürk. Atatürk is credited with the birth and modernization of Türkiye and his accomplishments are celebrated throughout the nation. During this day of remembrance, the entire country of Türkiye pauses for two minutes at 9:05 a.m., to symbolize the moment Atatürk passed.

Training Center Cape May, N.J., hosts a Independence Day Sunset Parade, July 3, 2022, in honor of the 102nd anniversary of the establishment of the chief petty officer rank. He remained a POW until the end of the war.Both were released from active duty following World War II but were later recalled in early 1948, serving with the 31st Fighter Group. Later, both served with the with the 36th Tactical Wing at Furstenfeldbruck Air Base in Germany. While in Europe, both helped form and flew in the U.S
