CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- STS-133 Commander Steve Lindsey prepares to perform touch-and-go landings aboard a Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA) on the Shuttle Landing Facility runway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. An STA is a Gulfstream II business jet that is modified to mimic the shuttle's handling during the final phase of landing. Lindsey and STS-133 Pilot Eric Boe will practice landings as part of standard training before space shuttle Discovery's launch to the International Space Station.Scheduled to lift off Feb. 24 at 4:50 p.m. EST, Discovery and its six-member crew will deliver the Permanent Multipurpose Module, packed with supplies and critical spare parts, as well as Robonaut 2, the dexterous humanoid astronaut helper, to the orbiting outpost.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. --  Dressed in his launch and entry suit, STS-122 Pilot Alan Poindexter heads across the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center to the shuttle training aircraft, or STA.  Poindexter and Commander Steve Frick will practice shuttle landings in the STA before the Dec. 6 launch on space shuttle Atlantis.  The STA is a Grumman American Aviation-built Gulf Stream II jet that was modified to simulate an orbiter's cockpit, motion and visual cues, and handling qualities.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At the Shuttle Landing Facility SLF at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United Space Alliance technicians make preparations to mark the final front and rear wheel stop locations of an orbiter. Space shuttle Atlantis completed the STS-135 mission by landing at the SLF on July 21, 2011, at 5:57 a.m. A special plaque will be permanently mounted at the runways edge to commemorate the final shuttle landing. Atlantis flew 33 missions, completed 4,848 orbits of the Earth, traveled nearly 126 million miles and spent 307 days in space. Atlantis carried 207 astronauts to space.

Breanne Stichler, mechanical engineer I, is photographed inside the cab of NASAs Crawler-Transporter 2 (CT-2) at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Aug. 8, 2019. Stichler started working at Kennedy in June and is among one of the few females to have ever driven the crawler. CT-2 will carry the agencys mobile launcher with the Space Launch System rocket from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B for the launch of Artemis 1, the first in a series of complex missions that will provide the foundation for human deep space exploration.
