Date: 1774.This allegorical scene captures a British artist's response to the American Revolution. Father Time, at left, holds up a magic lantern (an early image projector) to reveal a view of the destruction of Britain with heraldic leopards fighting. America sits in the shadows, at right, wearing products from her realm: a string of pearls, a feathered headdress, and an animal-skin wrap. Her physical separation from her companions, representing Europe, Asia, and Africa, suggests the impending imperial rupture. Using gouache paint, an unknown artist altered Dixon's original mezzotint print, which depicts a hopeful resolution to the conflict, to reveal anxiety about the outcome. Date: 18th century.According to his long-time friend and biographer, Michel-François Dandré-Bardon (1700 - 1783), Carle Vanloo received the prestigious commission for the vault of the church of Saint-Louis des Invalides in 1762. The chapel was initially decorated by Michel Corneille (1642 - 1708) with paintings of the same subject; however, by the mid- eighteenth century the panels were heavily damaged by humidity and needed to be replaced. Vanloo was the logical choice, having been named Premier peintre du roi this same year and having already proved himself worthy of monumental religious painting in his series of canvases for the choir of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires in Paris (executed 1746 - 1755). Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (below), Abraham about to Sacrifice Isaac (above) 1520 Perino del Vaga (Pietro Buonaccorsi) Italian One of the first independent projects Perino del Vaga undertook after the death of his master Raphael in 1520 was the decoration in fresco of the Pucci chapel in the Roman Church of Trinità dei Monti for the powerful Florentine cardinal Lorenzo Pucci (1458-1531). In the triangular-shaped compartments of the High Gothic-style vault, a challenging and awkward pictorial field, particularly for multifigured narrative compositions, the artist executed scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, to whom the chapel was dedicated.
