Christ Presented to the People 1475-1485 Northern Netherlands. This is a rare example of a surviving 15th-century painting from the northern provinces of the Netherlands (present-day Holland). This region had fewer centers of artistic production than the more populous southern Netherlands, and it also experienced substantial destruction of artworks during the iconoclastic outbursts of the mid-16th century. The few surviving panel paintings, as well as illuminated manuscripts, from this region are often characterized by an earthy realism. Here the artist was equally interested in the hostile reactions of the crowd as he was in giving poignancy to the figure of Christ, whom the Roman governor Pontius Pilate presents to the people for judgment.. Interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft 1675-1685 Holland. Having been stripped of their images and whitewashed by Protestant reformers in the 16th century, Hollandís large Gothic churches offered an excellent subject for the exploration of light, shade, and volume. Emanuel de Witte was one of a small group of painters who specialized in church interiors. Before he moved to Amsterdam in about 1652, he worked in Delft, a city whose artists were particularly fascinated by light and perspective. In this late painting, somewhat loosely based on one of the chief churches of Delft, the angles of the nave and transept converge on the preacher high in his pulpit; an organ and genealogical panels memorializing the dead provide the only decoration..
