Salomé with the head of John the Baptist. Salomé is the daughter of Herodias and Herod Philip. Her mother wanted to remarry with Herod Antipas. The preacher John the Baptist had convicted this marriage and was imprisoned on this. On his birthday, Herod promised Antipas to give Salomé what she wanted as she danced for him. Her mother herodias turned her to ask the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Against His meaning, Herod loved his promise. After the dance the chopped head was brought in on a dish. New Testament, Matthew 14: 6-11; Marcus 6: 14-29. Salomé has been presented here as an Eastern princess. She looks away from the dish in her hands, she will give to her mother. John's head is in a puddle of blood on the dish and is covered with a white canvas, which nevertheless shows the contours of his face.

Date: ca. 1580-85.The Roman Emperor Maxentius condemned Saint Catherine, a fourth-century princess of Alexandria who had attempted to convince him of the validity of Christianity, to twelve days of starvation in prison. Veronese shows her in a dark prison cell comforted by the dove of the Holy Ghost. Behind and below her are fragments of the wheel with which the Emperor sought, unsuccessfully, to kill her. She was ultimately martyred by beheading and holds the martyr's palm. The painting was done late in Veronese's career, probably around 1580-85, when his work was characterized by a dramatic use of light and a new depth of expression. Madame Auguste Cuoq (Mathilde Desportes, 1827-1910) ca. 1852-57 Gustave Courbet French Several artists ventured portraits of Mathilde Desportes, including the popular academician Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), but her husband, Auguste Cuoq, found most of them unacceptable. This likeness was among those he rejected, reportedly because he felt that it did not adequately convey his wifes beauty. Tilla Durieux (Ottilie Godeffroy, 1880-1971) 1914 Auguste Renoir French In July 1914, just prior to the outbreak of World War I, the famous German actress Tilla Durieux traveled to Paris with her husband, the art dealer Paul Cassirer, to pose for Renoir. The classicizing, pyramidal format of this composition lends a certain grandeur to the sitter, attired in the costume that the couturier Poiret designed for her role as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaws Pygmalion in 1913. When Renoir painted this ambitious portrait, he was so crippled with arthritis that he had to sit in a wheelchair with his brush strapped to his hand.. Carmencita 1890 William Merritt Chase American Carmencita, the dancer known as the Pearl of Seville,” was born in 1868 in Almería, on the southeastern coast of Spain, and became famous in her home country and in France during the 1880s. After she made her New York debut in 1889 at Niblo’s Garden, she was besieged with requests for private performances. John Singer Sargent arranged for her to perform in Chase’s studio on the evening of April 1, 1890. Afterward, Chase painted this lively portrait of the dancer, in which he suggested the audience’s enthusiasm by including the gold bracelet and flowers they had tossed at her feet. She was born on the family manor, Rensselaerswyck, near Albany, New York, and inherited a portion of her father's vast estate in 1839. This picture was painted in 1842, the year before her marriage to John Church Cruger, a prominent lawyer with whom she settled on Cruger's Island near Barrytown, New York. Healy painted the portrait in Paris, where he executed works for visiting Americans as well as for the French king, Louis Philippe. She made her first appearance in the ballet company of her Majesty's Theatre, London in 1843. She was discharged from the company as a result of an incident during a performance involving another dancer who was her rival for the affections of the Earl of Pembroke. In this painting, Buckner based Adeline's pose on the classical statue of Mercury in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

The Young Woman of Albano (L'Albanaise) Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (French, 1796-1875). , 1872. Oil on canvas, 29 3/16 x 25 13/16 in. (74.1 x 65.6 cm). Along with 42.195, this painting of a pale, contemplative young woman dressed in garments that conjure past times or distant places exemplifies Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corots practice as a figure painter. In this painting, a favorite model, Emma Dobigny, reclines in a theatrical “gypsy” costume, while a trio of maidens in the background dance or perhaps engage in a physical contest reflecting the athleticism for which ancient Sparta was renowned. The other portrays the model Mlle Darmelas wearing the traditional attire of the Italian town of Albano and gazing pensively into space. For Corot such costumes were interchangeable referents for imagined worlds, as well as opportunities to explore color, pattern, and texture in delicate touches of paint. European Art 1872
