Sophie and Agnes have been living together as a couple for 11 years and wanted to start a family. They are members of the French APGL association (for gay and lesbian parents and future parents). Following three artificial inseminations attempts in Spain, they decided to try IVF. They have been followed by a clinic in Ghent, Belgium since 2015. After monitoring and treatment that lasted several months, IVF took place in February 2016. It was a success and on 17th November 2016, Gael was born. Sophie and Agnes are in the examination room. The glucose sensor enables Manuella to check blood sugar levels regularly and easily, by scanning with the device. The insulin pump, controlled by another device, gives Manuella insulin throughout the day. Thanks to this device, she can add a bolus of insulin depending on her diet. At high school she has to cope with controlling her blood sugar levels and administering insulin herself. During her sports lesson her pump developed a problem. She goes to the infirmary to set up a new pump.

The researchers use electroencephalography on a person looking at a geometrical shape in order to measure brain activity at the moment when the person perceives a change of perception in this same shape. The recordings allow the various cerebral micro-states to be detected. Dr Britz, a neuroscientist at the University of Geneva and the Lausanne Federal Polytechnic School, has brought to light an important characteristic of conscious thought. Using neuroimagery methods and mathematical analysis, she has shown that conscious thought can be broken down into a succession of cerebral micro-states, or « thought atoms » . The temporal sequence of these micro-states is chaotic. This chaotic organisation of cerebral activity seems to be the key to allowing the brain to react quickly to unexpected events. In recent years, it has only gotten worse. The Colombian government says that more than 11,000 people have been injured or killed by land mines in the country since 1990, with more than 2,000 victims in the last five years alone and more than 50 this year.
