"Water Buses" On The River Thames - The first of the new Thames "Water-Buses" takes a party of M.P.'s for a trip an the river, after their inspection of the craft at Westminster Pier. In the photograph Country Hall can bee seen in the background.Following a report of a committee appointed by the Minister of Transport, the Rt.Hon.Alfred Barnes, M.P. to examine the possibilities of the experimental operation of regular passenger services on the River Thames, a service of "Water-Buses" will be inaugurated in the early summer. The boats to be used were originally constructed for use on the Thames as pleasure craft. Each is 66 ft. long with a 15 ft. beam, and can carry 150 to 170 passengers, most of them under cover. Swan Upping On The Thames -- The "Swan Uppers" boats starting off from Southwark Bridge, London, this morning.The annual Swan Upping on the River Thames took place to-day. The ownership of the swans that grace the waters of the River Thames is shared between the King and two City Livery Companies - the Vintners and the Dyers, and from an early time it was the custom for each owners birds to be distinctively marked. Nowadays it is considered unnecessary to mark the King's swans, but Lose of the Vintners and Dyers' Companies are marked, Every year, the swan markers of the three owners make a journey up the river for the purpose of identifying and marking the young swans, or cygnets, and that is what is meant by "swan upping." London's Largest F0ire-fighting Ship In Use On The Thames - The "Massey Shaw", one of the largest fire floats, was built at Cowes for the London County Council.She is 78ft. long by 13ft. 6ins., has a speed of 12 knots and is driven by two diesel engines. There are eight jets capable of throwing 5,000 gallons of water per minute, and a monitor with a 3½ inch jet throwing 4,800 gallons of water to a height of 250 feet.500012.
