Girodetís monumental work depicts the legendary Scottish bard Ossian and his followers welcoming French military heroes into paradise. This drawing of the Caryatids that adorn the fireplace designed by Stevens for Dorchester House relates to Legross initial idea to incorporate these figures into a base to support a bust of the artist. Ultimately, it was decided to reproduce the chimneypiece in its entirety. The drawing is a testament to Legross role in honoring a fellow artist he admired. View more. This one may record a painting Fragonard saw during a journey to Italy, or capture an idea he was considering for a painting of his own. Orpheus, identified by the lute, grasps for his love Eurydice as she is pulled down into Hades. The snarling animals near his feet may represent Cerberus, the multiheaded guard dog of the underworld.
