Anatomical depiction of an ectopic pregnancy.In 1672 physician and anatomist Reinier de Graaf published De mulierum organis, a book about the organs of the female body, with prints by Hendrik Bary. De Graaf was the first to conclude that a foetus grows from the mothers egg cell after it is fertilised by the fathers seed. He also discusses anomalies such as ectopic pregnancies (when the fertilised egg implants outside the womb).

A foetus attached by the placenta to the womb. In 1672, physician and anatomist Reinier de Graaf published his De mulierum organis about the female reproductive organs, with prints by Hendrik Bary. De Graaf was the first to conclude that a foetus was the product not just of a mans seed, but also of a womans egg. He discovered what he called blisters, which later became known as Graafian follicles.

He was Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow University, and editor of Curtis' "Botanical Magazine" from 1827 to 1865. In 1841, he was appointed director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and was succeeded by his son Joseph Dalton. Hooker documented the fern and orchid crazes that shook England in the mid-19th century in books such as "Species Filicum" (1846) and "A Century of Orchidaceous Plants" (1849). A gifted botanical artist himself, he wrote and illustrated "Flora Exotica" (1823) and several volumes of the "Botanical Magazine" after 1827.
