South Arabia as a general term refers to several regions as currently recognized, in chief the Republic of Yemen; yet it has historically also included Najran, Jizan, and 'Asir which are presently in Saudi Arabia, and Dhofar presently in Oman. The frontiers of South Arabia as linguistically conceived would include the historic peoples speaking the related South Arabian languages as well as neighboring dialects of Arabic, and their descendants. Anciently there was a South Arabian alphabet, which was borrowed by Ethiopia. South Arabia as generally conceived would include the lands inhabited by peoples partaking of its distinctive traditions and culture, which overlap recently demarcated political boundaries. Yemen or al-yaman means 'the south'. One etymology derives Yemen from yamin the 'right side' as the south is on the right when facing the sunrise; yet this etymology is considered suspect. Furniture plaque with figure in relief ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a standing male figure, bearded and with shoulder-length hair parted in the middle. He wears what are probably two long garments, each with a fringed hem: an undertunic with short sleeves that reaches to his ankles, and a robe over this with decoration at the shoulder, held closed by his left hand which is pressed against his chest. His right arm is held down against his side, showing a thick bracelet at the wrist. The plaque was found with several others carved in a similar style, in which plump, stocky figures are shown facing forward and depicted with rounded cheeks, vividly staring eyes, and similar hairstyles. Marble fragment of a pilaster 1st half of 1st century A.D. Roman This pilaster is decorated on three sides with a low relief that represents burning incense pans balanced on slender supports flanked by birds. On the front side, one pair of birds stretch down to eat from sheaves of wheat; on the left, roosters nibble branches; on the right, small birds pick at berries. The delicate workmanship and attenuated design are similar to the decoration on the wall paintings from Boscotrecase displayed in the gallery of Augustan art.. Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. Furniture plaque carved in relief with warrior ca. 9th century B.C. Iran Excavations at Hasanlu in Iran yielded a large number of carved ivory fragments, many in a distinctive style found only at this site, which probably decorated wooden furniture or were used as small precious objects such as boxes. The citadel at Hasanlu was attacked and destroyed around 800 B.C., most likely by military forces of the powerful state of Urartu, centered in present-day Armenia, eastern Turkey, and northwestern Iran. In the fire that destroyed the citadel, many objects were crushed and shattered. The blackened appearance of most of the Hasanlu ivories is due to their exposure to high temperatures at the time of the citadels destruction.This fragment depicts a battle scene, with the upper body of a warrior at left holding a shield in his left hand and a spear aimed downward in his right. Wall decoration with pomegranates in palmettes ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian Stucco reliefs were commonly used to decorate the iwans and reception halls of elite Sasanian houses. Many examples were found in excavated houses in the Ctesiphon area including this fragment from Tell Dheheb consisting of a repeating pomegranate in palmette design. The use of molds to make stuccos allowed for the creation of large scale repetitive patterns such as geometric and vegetal motifs. The city of Ctesiphon was located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 20 miles (32 km) south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. It flourished for more than 800 years as the capital of the Parthians and the Sasanians, the last two dynasties to rule the ancient Near East before the Islamic conquest in the seventh century. Name Stone of Senenmut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom A group of large, rough limestone chips in the collection have been inscribed witht the name and some of the titles of Hatshepsut's official Senenmut. These name stones (also called tally stones) were originally built into the terrace retaining walls and facade revetments of Senenmut's tomb chapel (TT 71). The stones were not intended to be seen in the finished structure, rather, they may have been included to symbolize Senenmut's ownership of the monument. Over time, the terrace and revetments collapsed, and the stones were scattered over the hillside below the tomb chapel where they were uncovered by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition during the 1935-1936 field season. Fragment of a marble neo-Attic relief with Peitho 1st century B.C. Roman This fragment shows Peitho, the personification of persuasion, seated on a high pillar with one hand on a dove and the other holding the edge of her himation (cloak). This scene was part of a decorative relief of Helen being persuaded by Aphrodite to leave her husband and go off to Troy with the Trojan prince Paris. The work was produced for the Roman market. A well-preserved Roman relief in the Archaeological Museum of Naples (Mus. Naz. 6682) shows the entire composition with all the names inscribed.. Attendants in a Procession ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period This block comes from a scene of the king and the royal family processing to the temple, a popular subject in the reliefs at Amarna. The family is often accompanied by attendants carrying fans and sunshades, like the four men whose heads are preserved on the block at the upper left. The men appear to stand beside the kings chariot, which the king himself drove; the reins extending between the chariot box and the horses necks may be seen across the bottom of the block. One man is depicted with a short haircut characteristic of Nubian mercenaries; his rounded chin without facial hair contrasts with the squared chins of the at least some of the other attendants, which are probably meant to indicate the short chin beards of individuals from Asia Minor.. Tile with Impressed Figures of Emaciated Ascetics and Couples Behind Balconies. Culture: India (ancient kingdom of Kashmir, Harwan). Dimensions: H. 16 in. (40.6 cm); W. 13 1/4 in. (33.6 cm); D. 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm). Date: 5th-6th century.This tile decorated the courtyard of an apsidal temple at Harwan, in Kashmir. As this site has a Buddhist affiliation, the presence of emaciated nude ascetics is not easy to explain; they are more readily understood within the Hindu Shaivite tradition. As this mixture of Buddhist and Hindu imagery is also found at other contemporary sites in Afghanistan and western India, the tile appears to be part of a larger exchange that perhaps occurred in relation to the emergence of Esoteric, or Vajrayana, Buddhism. The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. Relief with a Bird. Culture: Italian. Dimensions: Overall: 24 5/8 × 17 1/4 × 1 3/8 in., 30lb. (62.5 × 43.8 × 3.5 cm, 13.6kg). Date: 10th-11th century.This relief, cut down from a larger composition, shows an imaginary bird, a cock with a griffin-like head, set within foliage. It is from Salerno, where it was said to have been built into the masonry of a church. It was reused at a later date, and cut into its present form. While its original function is unknown, it may have been part of a chancel screen, a low wall in front of the sanctuary of a church. The exotic and orientalizing bird reflects the rich interchange of design motifs between the Islamic, Sasanian, Byzantine, and south Italian cultures in the century around 1000. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released.
