Date: ca. 1887-1840 B.C..This roughly shaped stela is dedicated to the palace controller Seankhptah, son of Ameny. Sporting a shoulder-length wig, he is shown seated on a block seat with one hand placed flat on his chest. The inscribed texts reveal that the stela was made by Seankhptah's retainer and hall-keeper Senbebu, son of Sebekre, who is shown standing on the right. Senbebu probably left this monument at the temple of Hathor at Serabit el-Khadim when he accompanied his master Seankhptah on a royal expedition to Sinai. Tile with Impressed Figures of Emaciated Ascetics and Couples behind Balconies and Ganders 5th-6th century India (ancient kingdom of Kashmir, Harwan) This tile decorated the courtyard of an apsidal temple at Harwan, in Kashmir. As this site has a Buddhist affiliation, the presence of emaciated nude ascetics is not easy to explain; they are more readily understood within the Hindu Shaivite tradition. As this mixture of Buddhist and Hindu imagery is also found at other contemporary sites in Afghanistan and western India, the tile appears to be part of a larger exchange that perhaps occurred in relation to the emergence of Esoteric, or Vajrayana, Buddhism. Incised furniture plaque with a frieze of lotus blossoms and buds. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 1.26 x 6.73 x 0.16 in. (3.2 x 17.09 x 0.41 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This narrow, rectangular plaque is incised with a frieze of alternating lotus blossoms and buds, joined by stems. It was found in a large storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Traces of light yellow paint are preserved on the buds and blossoms. The reverse of this piece has been roughened, probably to help secure the adhesive used to glue it to a frame. The frame was then probably inlaid as decoration into a piece of wooden furniture. This stylized floral frieze is similar to motifs on the large reliefs that lined the walls of the Assyrian palaces. Relief 16th century () Mexican Of all the arts flourishing in Mexico at the time the Spaniards arrived in the early sixteenth century, sculpture was the most highly developed. In their sculpture, often carved from basalt, wood, and even semi-precious stones, indigenous artists rendered concepts of their beliefs and rites in a powerful, expressive, and abstract style. With the arrival of the Catholic religion, new aesthetic traditions, and new technologies, artists had to learn new styles and imagery. Book illustrations were frequent models for their works, which may have been the case with the relief here. The fragment incorporates stylized floral motifs and creatures with human, bird, and fish features. The arrangement of the imagery suggests that the carving may have been part of a longer frieze on which a number of fantastic beings are separated by the same floral repeat motif.. Relief. Date: 600-275 BC.Limestone or terracotta plaques showing nude women in the niche of an Egyptian-form shrine were popular from 600-275 BC. Sometimes architectural pediments are carved and Bes figures or Hathor columns may be represented beside the niche; here traces of paint on the jambs can no longer be resolved into any particular form.The bobbed-haired voluptuous woman has a long history in the first millennium, but no precise identity. Small plaques like these are probably to be associated with the informal artworks distributed in conjunction with festivals celebrating a divine birth and fertility. Cylindrical box fragment with female figures ca. 8th century B.C. Assyrian This broken piece of carved ivory was probably part of a small cylindrical box, called a pyxis by scholars. Boxes of this type could have held precious goods including luxurious commodities such as spices, incense, cosmetics, perfumes or ointments. Two figures are partially preserved, shown standing in rectangular spaces bordered by an incised decorative motif that resembles abstract leaves or palm fronds. At left, the head and partial upper body of a figure can be seen with a mass of curled hair that falls to the shoulder, held back by a beaded diadem, wearing an elaborately decorated garment. The eye and ear are large and the full cheek is delicately modeled. At right, another figure is shown holding several lotus buds in the upraised right hand. The head, feet, and left arm are missing, but the pleated long garment belted at the waist is well-preserved, and two locks of straight hair can be seen falling again

India (West Bengal,Chandraketugarh) Considerable numbers of such molded plaques have beenexcavated at the ancient urban site of Chandraketugarh, in Bengal, suggesting that they served as icons for personal devotion in households or were placed at outdoor shrines. All are dominated by a hieratically enlarged central female figure whose precise identity is unknown to us. In this early phase of image worship in India, the goddess routinely appears with weapons projecting from her headdress, a form later associated with Durga. She is naked, apart from heavy jewelry and a massive hip belt. The honorific umbrella suggests she is a deity, as does the lowered hand gesture denoting the granting of boons. . This head of a monster once adorned the top of a niche in the wall of a small shrine at Candi Loro Jonggrang, a large Hindu temple complex in Central Java. The term candi is used in Indonesia to denote both Hindu and Buddhist temples. Monster heads such as this served as protectors against evil forces.

Ostracon with Line Drawing of Theban Triad ca. 1295-1070 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Ostraca (plural for ostracon) are potsherds used as surfaces for writing or drawing. By extension, the term is applied to chips of limestone, which were employed for similar purposes. Figural ostraca vary from sketches of a single feature to polychrome painted compositions. They were used to practice drawing, draft compositions, and copy scenes. However, some ostraca were created for more durable functions, used as cult images in religious practice and deposited at tombs or shrines as sites of access to the divine. Ostraca, on which animals appear acting as humans, have been variously interpreted as playful jokes, political satire, or illustrations to fables or myths in the oral tradition.This ostracon depicts the Theban Triad of gods, Amun, Mut, and their son Khonsu. To the left, Amun wears a tall plumed crown and a broad collar. In his front, his name and epithet "Amun-Re King of the Gods" is written

Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. Furniture plaque carved in relief with stylized tree ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Assyrian This plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a stylized tree that combines fan-like papyrus flowers and stylized rounded blossoms that may represent pomegranates. A delicate network of eleven branches radiates out from a central trunk, bound together at the midpoint by a horizontal element; above, a pair of curled leaf-like forms called volutes springs from the single vertical branch. Five branches end in papyrus flowers, and six end in rounded blossoms. The tree combines features of two different types of plants to depict a symbol of abundance and fruitfulness connected with the agricultural cycle. Both the king and queen are shown driving themselves in what appears to be a mad dash to the Great Temple, their subjects racing behind. Here, although only the heads are preserved, it is evident that the pair of horses at the upper right are being reined in. Their ears are pricked forward, suggesting the alertness of spirited animals excited by the activity around them. The man just visible at the right edge of the relief is either driving another chariot or walking or standing beside the horses, perhaps attending them as a groom..
