Relief of king's head in blue crown, head of child god on opposite side 400-200 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves complete objects constitute a special class of object. Guidelines like those for artists are often prominently exhibited as part of the object, although, in fact, many instances can be noted where the object simply could not serve as a suitable model for a traditional formal Egyptian representation. Personifications of kingship, figures that may represent the now emerging demigods Imhotep and Amenhotep Son of Hapu, and popular gods like Harpokrates or Isis, are heavily represented within the corpus. Taken together, the figures represented and the other features indicate the reliefs and sculptures of this class, sometimes called by Egyptologists "sculptors models / votives," were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with the prolifi

Cylinder seal and modern impression: suppliant goddesses and worshipers ca. early 2nd millennium B.C. Babylonian Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. Often preserving imager

Narcissus at the Source ca. 1600 Christoph Jamnitzer Visually rich, narratively dense, and rendered with exquisite craftsmanship, this gilded silver plaque was likely meant to adorn a box or cabinet. Small caskets decorated with precious metal plaques with iconographically, symbolically, or thematically related subjects were a specialty of the Jamnitzer family. Four consecutive generations of these Nuremburg goldsmiths reached the apex of their skill in Christoph Jamnitzer (1563-1618), grandson of famed 16th-century master Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507/8-1585). This relief combines several episodes from Ovids story of Narcissus from his famous text published in 8 A.D., the Metamorphoses, depicted as a continuous narrative within a unified pictorial space. In the background is Narcissus, as he is first described by Ovid, seen through the eyes of his admirer, the nymph Echo, who sees him hunting deer in the forest, with horn raised and hounds in pursuit. In the midground is Echo who follows Na

Tile with persea fruit and leaves ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period Among the faience figural tiles found in the area of the Great Palace, the ceremonial palace, was this one depicting yellow persea fruit and its leaves. Many other tiles are known depicting birds, flowers, and fish, among other subjects. The clear fine colors of the plants created in glaze would have mimicked plentiful gardens and marshes, frequent themes also in relief and wall paintings (see 30.4.136) created for royal surroundings.Elaborate decoration of columns and relief with inlaid materials is well-attested from Amarna, and indeed has a long tradition in Egypt. Faience tiles like this one, with an originally semi-round contour, may have been inlaid into stone wall reliefs. There are Amarna architectural reliefs that could accept the tiles, but no tiles have actually been found still attached.. Tile with persea fruit and leaves 571930

He is clean shaven and wears a version of the double crown worn by Egyptian kings, albeit with the raised back of the crown and uraeus duplicated. Behind the king is a row of bound prisoners who are also tied to each other by the neck. The prisoners are clean shaven and wear patterned robes. A date palm with pendulous fruit is in the terminal field between the prisoners and the kings victim. The content of this seal is reminiscent of the

Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. These flat mud figures, for instance, are inscribed in now much-faded red
