Head of Christ. Culture: Netherlandish. Dimensions: Overall: 9 9/16 x 10 1/2 x 9 1/8in. (24.3 x 26.7 x 23.2cm). Date: late 15th-early 16th century.Piety in the late Middle Ages encouraged the believer's intense emotional empathy in the suffering of Christ. Here, stone is transformed into flesh by the actual wood thorns piercing the forehead. The capacity for sculptural naturalism developed in Burgundy by Claus Sluter (ca. 1360-before 1406) and Niclaus Gerhaert von Leiden (active 1460-73) here endows the noble face of the dead Christ with an uncanny intensity. The head was part of a devotional group, either a Pietà or an Entombment of Christ. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Aphrodite Torso, 2nd-1st Century BC. Greece, Tarentum (Taranto, Italy), Hellenistic Period. Thasian marble; overall: 66.3 x 36.2 cm (26 1/8 x 14 1/4 in.). No single sculpture in the history of Western art has been more influential than Praxiteless Knidian Aphrodite, carved in the 4th century BC. The first sculpted nude figure of the goddess of love, it became a famous tourist attraction and made Praxiteles a celebrity in the Greek world. The shocking originality of showing the goddess unaware that she had been seen emerging from her bath made a lasting impression. It became a prototype for generations of Greek and Roman sculptors. Its popularity inspired many variations, including this one. The sensitivity of the carving, seen to advantage in the wet hair falling on the shoulders, imparts a dynamic sensuality.

Spout in the form of a man's head. Culture: Parthian. Dimensions: H. 20.9 cm. Date: ca. A.D. 1st-2nd century. This spout displays the high degree of Hellenism seen in many examples of Parthian art. The mustache and beard were originally inlaid with shiny iron pyrites, pieces of which are still visible in the beard. The central parting of the hair is a distinctly Parthian feature also found on coins. The long, thin face and prominent nose suggest the likeness of an actual individual. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Head of a Woman. This head of a woman is turned slightly to the left. Her lips are thick and pursed, the nose large and flat. Her hair is parted in the middle and pulled back in waves above the ears. A channel above the front hair indicates that a ribbon encircled the head to hold the hair in place. Neither the background attachment point nor the contour of a three-dimensional figure is preserved. The small scale of the head suggests that it may have belonged to a votive relief. However, the head could also have come from a statuette of a female figure.
