Goddess, Possibly Nana, Seated on a Lion 5th-6th century Afghanistan The Central Asian goddess Nana (Ardokhsho) seated on her lion mount is likely the source for this small icon from Buddhist Afghanistan. Nana in turn has close ties with a number of West Asian goddesses, notably the Near Eastern Anahita and the Mediterranean Tyche and Demeter. Here, the goddess is represented as benign, holding a cornucopia-like palmette. The imagery of Nana with a lion appears to have been transmitted principally via West Asian coinage.. Nagini (Serpent Queen or Consort of Nagaraja). Culture: India (Madhya Pradesh). Dimensions: H. 34 1/2 in. (87.6 cm). Date: second quarter of the 5th century.On the Indian subcontinent, temples have been dedicated to the worship of serpents since the dawn of civilization. Both Buddhism and Hinduism adopted nagarajas and naginis (serpent kings and their consorts) as protective divinities and depicted them like human beings. This sculpture from a pair of royal serpents (1987.415.1, .2) is carved in the round. The figure stand in front of cobras, whose open hoods form canopies for their heads. They date from the early part of the Gupta period and maintain ties to the style of the late Kushan period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

13th century Indian stone relief sculpture depicting Ketu, the descending lunar node in Vedic, or Hindu astrology. According to some accounts in Hindu mythology, Ketu belongs to Jaimini Gotra, whereas Rahu is from Paiteenasa gotra and hence both are totally different entities with distinct characteristics but are two parts of a common body. Ketu is generally referred to as a "shadow" planet. It is believed to have a tremendous impact on human lives and also the whole creation.

Date: 8th-early 9th century.This sculpture is a refined, elegant expression of the Mon aesthetic during the late phase of Buddhist art associated with the Dvaravati kingdom. It is not clear if that political entity was still viable during this period, but the distinct aesthetic created by its sculptors in the preceding two centuries still prevailed. The raised right hand gestures in teaching, the lowered hand grants boons. The image was cast from a silver alloy with a significant copper content and would have displayed a lustrous silver surface in its original state.cat. no. 120.
