The Apple Pickers modeled ca. 1881-83, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Hitler in East BerlinThe figure on the left, without a helmet, could be interpreted as a portrait of Hitler, with the lock of hair and the familiar profile. It could, however, be just a soldier with a bandaged head. The communists of East Berlin, without knowing it, may have erected a monument of Hitler storming the walls of Stalingrad. What cold be interpretated as a portrait of Hitler is included in the Bas-relief of one of 16 large stone sarcophagi in the big soviet war memorial in Treptow Park, East Berlin. An anonymous German claims he carved the figure while working as one of the 400 sculptors and masons who worked on the memorial. May 1, 1955. (Photo by Paul Popper, Paul Popper Ltd.).
