Fragment of a Plaque with a Standing Woman 4th century Coptic Colored wax originally filled the zones between the areas carved in relief. The relief would then clearly have shown a richly dressed woman holding a tray on which may rest a pair of gold bracelets. The figure may be a serving girl or Chresis, who personified the good use of acquired wealth.Bone plaques were used to decorate couches, chests, and other furniture. Some were carved in relief; others were carved in intaglio with the incised designs often filled with colored wax. Both styles could be used on the same object. Fragment of a Frieze 11th century This terracotta panel is from Tepe Madrasa in Nishapur in Iran. It was once a segment a portal in the prayer hall. Carved terracotta was used as decorative material for architectural sites in Iran as early as the tenth century. It was used to create columns, bosses, string courses, and bricks. Fragments with similar carved designs like these have been found throughout Iran. This rectangular section has a pattern of continuous trilobed pendants linked by interlaced stems, a motif usually described as fleur-de-lys, against a background that was once painted a vermilion red.. Openwork plaque with a sphinx at a tree ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This fragmentary openwork plaque depicts a sphinx, a fantastic creature with a human head and the body of a winged lion. The sphinx stands on its hind legs and reaches out both paws to touch the branches of a tree, represented by a curving bunch of leafy fronds above three stylized leaves ending in a curl. These stylized leaves, called volutes, appear frequently on other carved ivory pieces from the Assyrian capital at Nimrud. Carved ivory pieces such as this were widely used in the production of elite furniture during the early first millennium B.C. They were often inlaid into a wooden frame using joinery techniques and glue, and could be overlaid with gold foil or inlaid with colored glass or stone pieces to create a dazzling effect of gleaming surfaces and bright colors. Cuneiform tablet: administrative account concerning the distribution of barley and emmer ca. 3100-2900 B.C. Sumerian Of the many legacies left by the ancient civilizations of southern Mesopotamia, the invention of writing is paramount. At the end of the fourth millennium B.C., written language developed in the region, first as pictographs and then evolving into abstract forms called cuneiform. The pictographs, like the ones on this tablet, are called proto-cuneiform and were drawn in the clay with a pointed implement. Circular impressions alongside the pictographs represented numerical symbols. Cuneiform (meaning wedge-shaped) script was written by pressing a reed pen or stylus with a wedge-shaped tip into a clay tablet. Clay, when dried to a somewhat hardened state, made a fine surface for writing, and when fired the records written on it became permanent.Early writing was used primarily as a means of recording and storing economic information. Date: ca. 390 B.C..It has been suggested that this relief once decorated a state funerary monument erected in honor of Athenian soldiers fallen in battle. The scene at the far right end is preserved, with soldiers falling, escaping, or lying dead. In the missing section, horsemen may have filled the entire height of the panel. Panel fragment ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Iran This object is one of three related fragments in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, said to be from Ziwiye, which depict hunting and battle scenes (51.131.9; 51.131.11; 51.131.12). Stylistic differences suggest they were carved by different artisans, but all three show a familiarity with the scenes depicted in the stone reliefs that decorated Assyrian palaces. Because of their similarity to the Assyrian reliefs, they have been classified as Assyrian style ivories. They were likely used as furniture decoration. On this piece, a mounted and armored warrior at right tramples over the collapsing body of an enemy. Although difficult to see because of the worn surface of the plaque, his upturned face is visible below the horses muzzle, as is his right hand which reaches up to grab the warriors down-thrust spear. Plaque fragment with battle scene. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 1.14 x 3.03 in. (2.9 x 7.7 cm). Date: ca. 9th century B.C..This broken piece of ivory was incised with a battle scene, now difficult to see because of the extensive damage to the piece. At center is a chariot, driven by a figure who holds the horses' reins, standing next to a bearded archer who raises his bow. Their clothing and the archer's beard identify them as Assyrians. A spear is set in the back platform of the chariot, extending diagonally away from the two soldiers in the chariot; next to the spear point, an arm dangles, probably belonging to the corpse of an enemy soldier. Below and to the right, a soldier with a short beard and an unusual helmet adorned with feathers or spikes stands before a pair of horses, his arms upraised in surrender. Mud Brick Stamped with the Throne Names Aa-kheper-ka-re (Thutmose I) and Maat-ka-re (Hatshepsut) ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This fragmentary mud brick is stamped with a seal that combines the throne names of Hatshepsut (right) and of her father Thutmose I (left). Each royal name is written in a cartouche and followed by an epithet. The inscription reads (right to left) Maat-ka-re, given life; Aa-Kheper-ka-re, justified (true of voice). These epithets indicate that Hatshepsut lives and that her father is deceased. The two rulers are symbolically united by having their names and epithets enclosed in a large cartouche. The same seal impression was used to stamp another brick in the collection (90.6.43)The bricks probably came from Hatshepsut's funerary temple at Deir el-Bahri in Western Thebes. Cylinder seal and modern impression: creature flanking stylized tree ca. 11th-9th century B.C. Elamite Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. Date: 6th-7th century.Funerary stelae from the Byzantine period in Egypt, carved in stone and usually painted, were permanent monuments to the deceased. While normally embedded in walls or floors near the tomb, some were part of larger structures. Their decorations include scenes of paradise and symbols of the Christian Church. Head from a colossal statue of King Amenemhat III. Twelfth Dynasty, about 1830 BC from Bubast. The massive head comes from one of a pair of colossal statues set up in the temple of the cat-goddess Bastet at the city of Bibastis in the Nile delta. It shoes the severe style of the late Twelfth Dynasty, and the striking appearance would have been enhanced by the inlaid eyes originally fitted in the sockets.
