"Rustam Seizes Afrasiyab by the Girdle and Lifts him from the Saddle", Folio from a Shahnama (Book of Kings) ca. 1430-40 Abu'l Qasim Firdausi The action here depicts Rustam on an orange horse as he grasps his enemy Afrasiyab and pulls him off his horse. To Rustams chagrin, the belt breaks, and Afrasiyab falls to the ground, where he is rescued by his allies. This painting comes from a copy of the highly Persianate Shahnama that was probably made in northern India. The Abduction of Helen from a set of The Story of Troy. Culture: Chinese, Macao, for export market. Dimensions: Overall: 142 3/4 x 189 in. (362.6 x 480.1 cm). Date: probably first half 17th century.This monumental hanging depicts Helen's abduction--the legendary event that sparked the Trojan War. Chinese embroiderers relied on European printed sources for the subject and the composition but incorporated design motifs from their own decorative vocabulary, including phoenixes in the border and stylized waves in the background. The figures' faces and limbs were painted directly on the cotton foundation in a European style, likely by Chinese artists who were taught in Japan by Jesuit missionaries. Scientific analysis of the pigments supports this intercultural exchange, since testing found a blue-green pigment not used in Asia and a white common in Japan but not used in Europe. Siyah Kalem or 'Black Pen' is the name given to the 15th century school of painting attributed to Mehmed Siyah Kalem. Nothing is known of his life, but his work indicates that he was of Central Asian Turkic origin, and thoroughly familiar with camp and military life. The paintings appear in the 'Conquerors Albums', so named because two portraits of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror are present in one of them. The albums are made up of miniatures taken from manuscripts of the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries, and one series of paintings is inscribed 'work of Master Muḥammad Siyah Kalem'. Something of the style and techniques of Chinese paintings is apparent in these, and an acquaintance with Buddhist art, particularly in the depictions of grotesque demonic figures. The Shahnameh or Shah-nama ('The Book of Kings') is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c.977 and 1010 CE and is the national epic of Iran and related Perso-Iranian cultures. Consisting of some 60,000 verses, the Shahnameh tells the mythical and to some extent the historical past of Greater Iran from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century. The work is of central importance in Persian culture, regarded as a literary masterpiece, and definitive of ethno-national cultural identity of Iran. It is also important to the contemporary adherents of Zoroastrianism, in that it traces the historical links between the beginnings of the religion with the death of the last Zoroastrian ruler of Persia during the Muslim conquest.

The Takamatsuzuka Tomb (Takamatsuzuka Kofun or 'Tall Pine Tree Ancient Burial Mound' is an ancient circular tomb in Asuka village, Nara prefecture, Japan. Dating from the 6th-7th century CE, it contains painted fresco wall paintings of courtiers in Goguryeo-style garb. The paintings are in full color with red, blue, gold, and silver foil representing four male followers and four abigails together with the Azure Dragon, Black Tortoise, White Tiger, and Vermilion Bird groups of stars. The paintings are designated as a national treasure of Japan. For whom the tomb was built is unknown, but the decorations suggest it is for a member of the Japanese royal family or a high-ranking nobleman.

Double-sided folio from a Ramayana series ca. 1690-1710 India, Himachal Pradesh, unidentified sub-school These four folios (2018.360-.363) from a dispersed manuscript of fifty leaves, can be securely attributed to the hill schools (Pahari) of northern India on the basis of the ink annotations in Takri script, a variant of Devanagari, widely used in the hills. However, the precise school or atelier remains elusive. The paintings display a folkish hand emulating a courtly style, and the limited range of colors employed points to an atelier at which the more expensive pigments seen elsewhere in Pahari court paintings were either not available or unaffordable. The paper employed is in the horizontal format that persisted in provincial sub-schools of Indian painting, particularly those in the relative isolation of the remoter hill valleys of northern India, the probable home of the atelier responsible for this series. The style resonates most strongly with the Nurpur and Mankot sub-schools

The rays of golden sun--the insignia that Rajput princes displayed on their standards--add a surreal if somewhat celestial dimension to the composition. This painting is remarkable for its complex topography, differentiated with imaginatively devised pictorial devices--hillocks, streams, fields--each deployed to create a landscape of the imagination.

Zhang Xuan, who flourished during the reign of Tang Emperor Xuanzong (712-756), painted many pieces of art, one of his best known paintings is Court Ladies Preparing Newly-Woven Silk, of which a single copy survives painted by Emperor Huizong of Song (r. 1100-1125) in the early 12th century. He also painted the Spring Outing of the Tang Court, which was later remade by Li Gonglin.

Krishna sits on a shell-shaped throne and holds in his right hand a lotus flower, while his left hand rests on a spherical scepter that stands between his folded legs on a flower-shaped leaf in the shell, behind him are two more arms holding seafood. Screen of Two Dancers (Bugi zu bybu) 18th century Unidentified Against a blank background sprinkled with gold, two female figures move in rhythmic dance poses and gestures with their opened folding fans. Both wear elaborately patterned "small sleeve" kimonos (kosode), in rich colors with flourishes of gold. Screen paintings such as this, often in the format of six-panel folding screens, evidenced the growing popularity of new forms of dance in the Edo period, and an interest in exhibiting the latest trends in women’s fashions. Early examples of this genre appeared in the early seventeenth century, but this example, from perhaps a century later, preserves the format of the earlier works. Such screen paintings also reflected the trend, in hanging-scroll paintings by ukiyo-e artists, of focusing attention on a single figure posed in stylish and elegant attire..
