According to the text dedicated to the exploits of the great goddess Devi in her various forms, there was a time in the mythic past when a buffalo demon was ravaging the world. Storm clouds swirl above and dust below him. The goddess in her warrior aspect in which she is named Durga rides a chariot pulled by two leonine tigers with blue skies and flowering trees above her. The two are about to clash in a bloody battle that will take place on the gently sloping hillside evocative of the western Himalayan foothills where this painting was made.

A marbled picture of Rustam catching Rakhsh, c. 1650. Attributed to Shafi (Indian, active about 1650). Opaque watercolor and gold on paper; page: 37.2 x 21 cm (14 5/8 x 8 1/4 in.). This scene depicts the young hero Rustam catching a foal, Rakhsh (meaning light”), who will be his faithful companion through many adventures. A prophet-like shepherd figure with a staff at the upper left predicts that Rustam will be the savior of Iran. At the top of the page a feline has caught its prey, while a hunter steps on its tail. This extraordinary painting has more applications of marbled colorant than any other known example. Even all the flowers and birds have been articulated through marbling in a feat of registration and control by a master of the technique.

Tapestry 1904-1914 Hungary. This tapestry evokes fifteenth- and sixteenth-century European art and design, even though it was made centuries later. Resplendent in a gown and sitting atop a powerful horse, the crowned figure proudly carries a falcon. The fashionable hunting scene is set in a simplified millefleur (thousand flowers) design. This combination was a popular tapestry style during the late medieval period.The pairing of the detail in the patterning of the dress with the angularity of the forms is typical of tapestries designed and made at the GˆdˆllÛ School of Weaving. The GˆdˆlIÛ Workshops, which included the weaving school, were established in the early twentieth century just north of Budapest. There, artists designed and made a great variety of decorative arts objects in hopes of establishing a Hungarian national aesthetic. Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi castle (Arabic: ), located 80 km south-west of Palmyra on the Damascus road, is a twin palace with Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi, built by the Umayyad caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik in 727 CE. It was used as an eye of the king during the Umayyad era, to control the movement of the desert tribes and to be a barrier against them, as well as being a hunting chalet. Later it was utilized by the Ayyubids and the Mamelukes but was abandoned permanently after the Mongol invasions. The castle is quadrangular in outline with 70-meter sides. The central doorway to the castle is very attractive, and has been moved to the National Museum of Damascus to be used as the entrance. Its semi-cylindrical towers on the sides of the doorway, columns, and the geometric shapes mirrored a blend of Persian, Byzantine and Arab architecture. Not much remains from the castle. The Triumph of Time over Fame ca. 1500-1530 South Netherlandish An old man representing Time commands a chariot that crushes Fame beneath its wheels. Four famous long-lived men accompany him on foot: the biblical figures of Adam, Methusalah, and Noah as well as Nestor, from Greek mythology. The humbling theme that fame ultimately is lost to the passage of time derives from I Trionfi (The Triumphs), by the fourteenth-century Italian poet Petrarch. By about 1500, it had been translated into French for Louis XII and pictured in royal tapestries. This tapestry is one of a series from the chteau de Septmonts, the residence of the bishops of Soissons. Bishop Symphorien de Bullioud, who was familar with Italian culture because of his diplomatic missions to Rome and Milan for Louis XII, likely commissioned the work.. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Severed heads, arms, and legs and a man who has lost his hand are arranged across the composition. The legs and tail of a downed horse are visible at the lower left. The sketchy drawing and thin wash used for the figures suggest that the image was produced in thirteenth-century Egypt.
