The Ijo people of Nigeria have elaborate funeral practices that include carving shrine figures like the one on view here. The figure wears a European hat, a locally recognized sign of power and prestige. Osiris-Iah 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Osiris-Iah is a form of Osiris specifically linked to the moon, a feature made explicit in this figure through the crown, which represents the moon disk resting on the crescent moon, thereby encompassing the moon in all of its phases. The statuette conforms to the standard iconography for this deity in which he is shown with the moon crown, striding, and wearing a short kilt. Osiris-Iah can also be shown seated and wearing a mummiform garment with the same crown, such as on 1971.272.15. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The figure represents a child god in a seated/reclining position, wearing the double feather crown, complete with a streamer at the back. The crown associates him with the god Amun, a connection that is also made explicit in the inscription on the base. The child god, as here, is usually distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and a sidelock on the right side of his head. The God's Father, Prophet of Amun in Karnak, Ankhpakhered, son of Nesmin and Tadisetdiankh 380-300 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Ankhpakhered was a member of the priesthood at Karnak, the great temple complex of the Egyptian god Amun, where his statue stood. His assured, striding, bare-chested figure evokes Egypts long traditions. But here it is touchingly combined with sweet features and a smooth egg-shaped head like a newborns. This last is a style that probably signals the wish for rebirth into the afterlife. The simple figure is surrounded by an elaborate, supportive framework of hieroglyphic texts. A prayer to share in the offerings given to the god Amun appears on the base before his right foot. Behind his left leg is an address to passersby asking that they pray for him as they will wish one day that others would pray for them. Statuette of Osiris 664-30 BC Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Osiris, foremost of the Egyptian funerary gods and ruler of the underworld, stands upright and wears his atef crown. The crowns feathers, now lost, were separately cast and mechanically attached into slots on the sides of the crown. The gods eyes are deep-cut, probably for the addition of gilding or inlay. He is dressed in a close-fitting enveloping garment and he holds the royal crook and flail with his hands poised symmetrically with the fists touching. Osiris statuettes such as this one were some of the most abundant temple offerings in Egypt by the first millennium B.C., reflecting both the gods importance and changing cult practices that spurred the wide-scale dedication of deity statuettes. Initially, he was known as a deity called the "Great White One" (that is, the moon), but soon this god was conflated with Thoth, the better known ibis-headed god of writing and recording. Thoth's responsibilities included the calendar, which in ancient Egypt was lunar based, facilitating the integration of the two deities. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period This statuette depicts Ptah, the chief god of Egypt's capital city Memphis and master craftsman of the gods. He is easy to identify by his tight-fitting cap, straight beard (different from the usual curved divine beard on other gods), and enveloping mummiform garment. The garment has a stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity also on Osiris statuettes, but its meaning is unclear. His hands emerge from long vertical slits in the cloak, which are visible on the chest. He also wears a broad collar with a faintly inscribed counterpoise and he carries a scepter. Commonly Ptah holds a scepter that combines the symbols for life (ankh), dominion (was), and stability (djed), but here he holds only the was scepter, hearkening back to earlier representations of the god. Head of Iyoba 18th-19th century Edo peoples In the Benin kingdom, the iyoba, or mother of the oba (king), occupies an important and historically significant place within Benin's political hierarchy. The title was first conferred upon Idia, the mother of king Esigie, who used her political skill to save her son's kingdom from dissolution in the late fifteenth century. Ever since that time, queen mothers have been considered powerful protectors of their sons and, by extension, the kingdom itself. Because of the enormous esteem in which they are held, iyobas enjoy privileges second only to the oba himself, such as a separate palace, a retinue of female attendants, and the right to commission cast brass sculptures for religious or personal use. Ancestral altars dedicated to past iyobas, like those of past obas, are furnished with cast brass commemorative heads. Twin shrine, mid 20th century, 9 × 6 1/2 × 6 1/16 in. (22.86 × 16.51 × 15.4 cm), Clay, wood, metal, Mali, 20th century, Among the Dogon peoples of Mali, the birth of twins is a special event. Twins receive specific names, they are completely shaved when presented for the first time to relatives and neighbors, and a small house shrine is made for the father to perform rituals. This twin shrine consists of a clay basis with two small depressions for the offerings. The male and female wooden sculptures represent the twins and are empowered by pieces of bent iron in the shape of the handle of a hoe. Once a year, during communal ceremonies, the twin shrine is brought out of the house for offerings of millet paste and chicken blood.

Seated on a throne with both hands flat on the knees, her wears a nemes-headcloth, false beard and short kilt, which fitted with a ceremonial bull's tail, shown between the leg. The Head of Nefertem (also known as the Head from the Lotus Bloom or Tutankhamen as the Sun God) was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen (KV62) in the Valley of the Kings in West Thebes. It depicts the King (Pharaoh) as a child and dates from the 18th dynasty (New Kingdom).

Amulet depicting Isis, Horus, and Nephthys 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The three deities depicted in this triad amulet are some of the main protagonists in the Osiride myth that tells the murder and revival of the god Osiris and the birth and triumphal avenge of his son Horus. According to this myth the sister goddesses Isis and Nepthys cared for the body of Osiris and later they protected his son Horus as a young child. Horus is in the center of this group, flanked by his mother Isis on his right and his aunt Nephthys on his left. Isis is identified by the stepped throne hieroglyph on her head and likewise Nephthys wears the two hieroglyphic components of her name as a headdress. The goddesses are holding the hands of Horus, who is shown slightly larger than them, but his sidelock and nudity identify him as a child. The intimate gesture of holding Horus hands not only alludes to his young age, but it also symbolizes the goddesses care and protection for him. This amulet

Phnom Bok is a hill in the northeast of the East Baray in Cambodia, with a prasat (temple) of the same name built on it. It is one of a 'trilogy of mountains', each of which has a temple with similar layout. The creation of the temple is credited to the reign of Yasovarman I (889-910) between the 9th and 10th centuries and was established after he moved his capital to Angkor and named it Yasodharapura. The two other sister temples, named after the contiguous hills, are Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Krom. The temple is an Angkor monument. It is dedicated to the Trimurti of the Hindu pantheon, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It was built in Bakheng style (893-927) and designed with individual sanctums, which have door openings to the east and west. These are raised on a foundation with a plinth made of laterite stone.

Nestorius and his teachings were eventually condemned as heretical at the First Council of Ephesus in 431 and the Council of Chalcedon in 451, leading to the Nestorian Schism in which churches supporting Nestorius broke with the rest of the Christian Church. Afterward many of Nestorius' supporters relocated to Sassanid Persia, where they affiliated with the local Christian community, known as the Church of the East. Subsequently the Church of the East became increasingly Nestorian in doctrine, leading it to be known alternately as the Nestorian Church.

Nephthys, Horus, and Isis Amulet Late Period, Saite 664-525 B.C. The three deities depicted in this triad amulet are some of the main protagonists in the Osiride myth that tells the murder and revival of the god Osiris and the birth and triumphal avenge of his son Horus. According to this myth the sister goddesses Isis and Nepthys cared for the body of Osiris and later they protected his son Horus as a young child. Horus is in the center of the group here, flanked by his mother Isis on his left and his aunt Nephthys on his right. Isis is identified by the stepped throne hieroglyph on her head and likewise Nephthys wears the two hieroglyphic components of her name as a headdress. The goddesses are holding the hands of Horus, who is shown slightly larger than them, but his sidelock and nudity identify him as a child.
