Egypt: Nefertari, Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramesses the Great of the 19th Dynasty (r. 1279-1213 BCE). Mural from the Tomb of Queen Nefertari, Thebes, c. 1298-1235 BCE. Nefertari (-c. 1255 BCE), also known as Nefertari Meritmut, was the first of the Great Royal Wives of Ramesses the Great. Highly educated and literate, Nefetari corresponded with other prominent royals of the age and was a skilled diplomat. She is one of the best known Egyptian queens, alongside Cleopatra, Hatshepsut and Nefertiti. Her name meant 'beautiful companion'.

The Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu was an important New Kingdom period temple structure in the West Bank of Luxor in Egypt. The temple has inscribed reliefs depicting the advent and defeat of the Sea Peoples during the reign of Ramesses III. Initial excavation of the temple took place sporadically between 1859 and 1899

Stela of Merneptah. Dimensions: H. 28.8 cm (11 5/16 in.); W. 14.4 cm (5 11/16 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 13-17. Date: ca. 1802-1550 B.C..This round-topped stela with a solid red border is dedicated to a man named Merneptah. He is shown seated on a block seat, which resembles a throne often used by a king or a deity, rather than a more common four-legged chair. He is dressed in a long wraparound skirt, which the artist has rendered as a sheer garment in order to reveal the short kilt underneath. Merneptah holds a water lily blossom, a symbol of regeneration, up to his face. Immediately in front of his legs is a table laden with bread loaves and a bundle of green onions. A woman named Ina stands before him and holds up a branch, an unusual object in this context. Above the two figures are a pair of wedjat eyes and a shen sign, all of which have protective meanings. The three lines of inscription at the bottom of the stela include an offering formula that invokes the god Osiris. Museum: Metro

Because papyrus was a costly material, it was normally reserved for important documents such as administrative records and funerary literature. Fragment of cartonnage depicting three deities. Dimensions: H. 20.5 cm (8 1/16 in.); L. 34.4 cm (13 9/16 in.). Date: 200 BC-200 AD.Designed to encase a mummy, this cartonnage is composed of about seven layers of linen plastered together to form a hard shell. Visible on this fragment are three gods: at the right is the creator god Atum in the double crown; followed by the ram-headed god Khnum; and then Hapy, personification of the fertility brought by the Nile River. An inscription in roughly-sketched hieroglyphs runs from right to left in the band above their heads. The somewhat awkward style of the figures reflects the period from which this fragment dates. A photograph taken within the Tomb of Renni, the 'Overseer of the priests of Nekhbet' at the time of Amenhotep I at Elkab, situated 90 km to the south of Thebes. Amenhotep I was the second Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Egypt. His reign is generally dated from 1526 to 1506 BC.

Wall frieze from the tomb of Ramesses VI. Tomb KV9 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings was originally constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses V. He was interred here, but his uncle, Ramesses VI, later reused the tomb as his own. The layout is typical of the 20th dynasty - the Ramesside period. God Thoth Egyptian Art Relief

West wall of the chapel of Nikauhor and Sekhemhathor ca. 2465-2389 B.C. Old Kingdom Nikauhor was a judge and a priest of Userkaf's sun temple and mortuary cult. His wife, Sekhemhathor, was a priestess of Hathor and Neith. The false door niche on the left, flanked by figures of Nikauhor, belongs to him; that on the right, flanked by figures of the couple, belongs to his wife. Nikauhor's offering stela is missing, and that of Sekhemhathor-which originally was placed above her false door-has been displaced to the left because of the height of the wall. Nikauhor's single figures in particular are very finely carved; his mature, austere features are characteristic of 5th Dynasty style as opposed to that of the 4th. The relief flanking his wife's false door is flatter and less modeled. The intervening expanse of wall shows, from the bottom, a painted dado, the slaughter of cattle, the presentation of offerings, and a game of senet being played alongside a group of musicians. The Standard of Ur survived in only a fragmentary condition, as the effects of time over the last several millennia had decayed the wooden frame and bitumen glue which had cemented the mosaic in place. The weight of the soil had crushed the object, fragmenting it and breaking the end panels. The present form of the artifact is a reconstruction, presenting a best guess of its original appearance. It has been reconstructed as a hollow wooden box measuring 21. 59 centimetres (8. 50 in) wide by 49. 53 centimetres (19. 50 in) long, inlaid with a mosaic of shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli. The box has an irregular shape with end pieces in the shape of truncated triangles, making it wider at the bottom than at the top. Inlaid mosaic panels cover each long side of the Standard. Each presents a series of scenes displayed in three registers, upper, middle and bottom. The two mosaics have been dubbed 'War' and 'Peace' for their subject matter, respectively a representation of a military camp

Queen Nefertari Playing Senet ca. 1279-1213 B.C. Original New Kingdom, Ramesside Nina de Garis Davies Nefertari was the Great Royal Wife, or principal queen, of Ramesses II. Her importance to the king is evident in the monuments he created to honor her. At Abu Simbel, the Ramesses constructed a small rock-cut temple for her next to his own and, for her burial, he commissioned a beautifully painted tomb in what is now called the Valley of the Queens.This facsimile copies of one of the paintings from Nefertari's tomb. In this vignette, the queen sits in front of a table playing a game of senet again an invisible opponent. This was a popular game in life, but when represented in a tomb, as here, it has symbolic meaning. The word senet means "passing" and the game was seen as a parallel to the journey into the afterlife and the obstacles one had to overcome on the way.In the scene, Nefertari wears an elaborately pleated and fringed gown of sheer linen. Wall painting depicting Anubis; inside the Theban Tomb of Roy (TT255), in Dra' Abu el-Naga'. It forms part of the Theban Necropolis, situated on the west bank of the Nile opposite Luxor. The sepulchre is the burial place of the Ancient Egyptian official, Roy, who lived at the end of the 18th dynasty, during the reign of Horemheb. Roy was a Royal Scribe in the Estates of Horemheb and of Amun. His wife, who appears with him in the tomb paintings, is named as Nebtawy, or 'Tawy'

In ancient Egypt entertainment by dancers was common, but mixed gender dancing is not represented in murals and frescoes. Egyptian dancing may have been influenced by the Nubian tradition, which became very popular in Rome during the days of the empire, and is still alive in parts of the Sudan today. Dancers from the south were brought to Egypt and seemingly much admired. Egyptian choreography appears to have been complex. Dances could be mimetic, expressive - similar to modern ballet with pirouettes and the like, or gymnastic, including splits, cartwheels, and backbends. A few pictures of acrobatic dancers have been found, generally depicting a number of dancers performing the same movement in unison. For sociable banquets the dancing girls were often selected from among the servants or the women living in the harem of the nobleman in whose house the party was held; possibly professional dancers were also hired for these occasions.
