Coffin of Ameny ca. 1981-1802 B.C. Middle Kingdom The owner of this coffin Ameny is simply designated as the "son of a member of the elite" in the inscription on the lid. On the evidence of his mummy - now in the Peabody Museum, Cambridge - he was already an old man when he died. The inscription on the lid also begs the god Anubis, "Lord of Sepa," to allow the deceased to "cross the sky, be interred, and ascend to the Great God, Lord of Heaven." The painted decoration on the coffin box with its series of doorways surrounded by intricately enhanced niches and other architectural elements evokes associations with the Egyptian idea of the "false door," a symbolic passage through which the deceased could exit spiritually from his resting place in the tomb - or here the coffin - to receive offerings. The eyes above one of the doorways corresponded with the eyes of the mummy that originally lay on its side within the coffin. The eyes are composed of elements of human eyes and the feathering

Book of the Dead Papyrus of Tiye ca. 975-945 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Discovered tucked inside her hollow wooden "Osiris figure" (now Cairo JE 49164) this papyrus was designed to assist Tiye in her successful transition from death to eternal life. To the left, Tiyes mummy is upright before her tomb, which is surmounted by a pyramidion bearing her name and titles. She mourned by one woman, who sits on the ground and raises her hand to her face, while a second woman offers incense and libations. Tiyes ba (spirit) in the form of a human-headed bird raises her arms to partake of the water that flows from above. Above is an prayer asking for offerings from the king and Osirs. At the right of this scene, Osiris, identifed as the god of the west, the land of the dead, by the standard that replaces his head, stands before a pile of offerings. Such scenes are seen in association with Spell 1 of the Book of Coming Forth by Day (known to us as the Book of the Dead). In the center is Spell

Inlays and Shrine Elements. Dimensions: various measurements for group. Date: 380-30 B.C..In temples, statuettes of Egyptian gods were housed in small shrines, from which they emerged for rituals. Gods also had processional barks that carried shrines in which the god remained concealed during processions within and outside the temple. Wood shrines densely inlaid with figural, hieroglyphic, and decorative glass elements are attested from the late sixth century B.C. onward. Inlay elements might be placed in separate cells or be contiguously adhered on a common background. Most such shrines are, however, only known from the jumbled masses of elements preserved in temple deposits after the shrine(s) in the deposit had decayed. This imagined scene draws from a large group of fine, monochromatic and mosaic glass inlays that were purchased together. The scene suggests ways the elements might have been meaningfully arranged. In the upper register, a king kneels and offers globular jars of win
