The Female Pharaoh Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This graceful, life-size statue depicts Hatshepsut in female attire, but she wears the nemes-headcloth, a royal attribute usually reserved for the reigning king. In the columns of text inscribed beside her legs on the front of the throne, she has already adopted the throne name Maatkare, but her titles and epithets are still feminine. Thus, she is "Lady of the Two Lands" and "Bodily Daughter of Re." On the back of the throne, part of an enigmatic scene is preserved which probably consisted of two back-to-back goddesses. The goddess has the body of a pregnant hippopotamus with feline legs and a crocodile tail appears behind her legs. Although this resembles Taweret, the goddess who protects women and children, it is probably Ipi, a royal protector who appears in the same position on a statue of the Dynasty 17 king Sebekemsaf I (about 1575 B.C.) in the British Museum.The pose of the statue, seated with hands flat on the knees,

Statue of a Female Figure. Dimensions: H. 12.7 cm (5 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 12, late-early 13. Date: ca. 1850-1640 B.C. .Female figures of this type, often found with burials especially of the Middle Kingdom, were in the past called "concubines." Nowadays they are understood in a more general sense as representions of the life giving female powers of sexual attraction and giving birth, powers from which the dead could derive a new life. As most representatives of the type, this faience figure lacks the lower legs and has elaborate tatoos all over its body. The figure also wears a girdle of cowrie shell shaped beads and a long bead necklace crossed over the chest. The hair is arranged in the so-called "Hathor" style-two thick tresses with curled ends falling forward over the shoulders. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

An ancient base asking blessings from Heka for the Scribe of the Library of Atum Pa-kap, son of the Prophet of Atum Pa-iry-kap and the mistress of the House Hr-ib-Wadjet; statue modern above the ankles 664-332 B.C. and Modern Late Period and Modern The bronze base of this figure is ancient and the hieroglyphic inscription asks the god Heka for all life, health and joy for one scribe of the library of Atum Pa-kap. However, the statuette above the ankles, including the belt inscribed in hieratic, is of brass, an alloy which was not used for metal statuary in pharaonic or Ptolemaic Egypt, and is certainly modern.. Statue of a Man, 200-100 BC or later. Egypt, Greco-Roman Period, Ptolemaic Dynasty. Black basalt; overall: 57.9 cm (22 13/16 in.). This striding figure represents a very late development in Egyptian sculpture and a fascinating combination of old and new. In keeping with contemporary fashion, he is draped in a three-part costume consisting of a T-shirt, wraparound skirt, and shawl. Also new is the naturalistic rendering of the man's real hair, here accompanied by a full beard. Entirely traditional, however, are the striding pose, the use of a back pillar, and the way the curves of the body show through the tightly wrapped garments.

Female Bes Middle Kingdom ca. 1981-1640 B.C.

Overseer Shabti of Nany. Dimensions: H 9.7 × W. 3.5 × D. 2.3 cm (9.7 × 3.5 × 2.3 cm). Dynasty: Dynasty 21. Reign: reign of Psusennes I. Date: ca. 1050 B.C..Seven shabti boxes were interred with Nany; five came to New York in the division of finds (30.3.26-.30), two of them are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. All are made of sycamore wood and have high ends and flat lids. A white stucco wash was applied after the lids were closed. The shabtis, made of faience, were packed tightly in each box, in an upright position. They are of two types: foremen and workmen, with a ratio of one forman to ten workers (see 30.3.28a-h). Osiris 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Osiris, foremost of the Egyptian funerary gods and ruler of the underworld, is shown sitting and wearing a close-fitting enveloping garment. The garment hugs the contours of his arms and shoulders. His eyes are deep cut for the addition of gilding or inlay, and a suspension loop is positioned at the back of the neck. He holds the royal crook and flail with his arms crossed on his chest. Copper alloy statuettes of Osiris generally exhibit one of three arm positions: asymmetrical with the right fist over the left, symmetrical with the fists touching, and arms crossed. The latter position, seen here, is the least common of the three but still frequently utilized. Upper half of a woman from a pair or group statue ca. 1850-1650 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom This small sculpture represents the top section of a female, who is wearing the so called Hathor-wig. The hair is beautifully shown as two voluminous masses that curve from the top of her head around her ears and onto the front, where they fall onto the chest and end in two thick curls (the right one is damaged). A third section of hair, only visible in the back, is situated underneath and falls straight onto the woman's back. Her ears are extremely large.The woman wears a tight dress with straps that run across her breasts. On her right side is a break in the area of her shoulder. However, just enough is preserved that shows that something was situated in this area, which shows that the woman was originally part of a pair or group statue.. Kushite Pharaoh ca. 713-664 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Kushite kings wore distinctive regalia, including a cap crown, double uraei, and ram's-head amulets. On this kneeling king, the double uraei have been "corrected" to one, while the ram's-head amulets on the necklace and the king's name on his belt have been hammered out by a later Saite king. The cap crown with a falcon engraved in the back, the bandeau with streamers, and the diadem with many tiny uraei were left untouched.The small bronze kneeling figure represents two aspects of Kushite Period art that are intensifications of tendencies already extant in the Third Intermediate Period. Provision of small bronze royal attendant statuary demonstrated an specially pious regard for the gods and their temples. And, stylistically, there was an inclination toward models from the past, particularly the Old Kingdom, a taste clearly visible in the broad shoulders and narrow waist of the small bronze. Defining characteristics include elongated bodies, wing-like arms, and small heads with stylized faces. While most of them are sexless, female figures can be recognized by the presence of holes in the earlobes - as is the case here. Such ritual sculptures could be used by diviners, healers, judges, and rainmakers. Some served as status symbols for important elders.

Date: 18th-19th century.This female figure is one of about a dozen works that have been attributed to the same Dogon artist, identified by art historians as the Master of Ogol after a village in the Sanga region where a work in this corpus was collected in 1935. The shape of the head and facial features of works created by the Master are distinctive for the helmetlike head and the unique horizontally stacked mouth-nostrils-chin ensemble, closely framed by the strong vertical nose and cylindrical lip ornament. Works identified as dege dal nda, or "sculptures of the terrace," were only removed from storage for the funerals of rich men, on which occasions they were dressed and displayed on the rooftop terrace of the deceased. Bastet holding sistrum. Dimensions: H. 9.7 cm (3 13/16 in.); W. 3.8 cm (1 1/2 in.); D. 2.7 cm (1 1/16 in.). Date: 664-30 B.C..Bastet, here shown as a cat-headed goddess, was a powerful protective figure who also was known for her fertility. She could be represented with a lion head as well, but as a cat-headed goddess her peaceful traits were emphasized. Her personal adornments and garments are elaborate on statuettes, often more so than other goddesses, and she usually carries numerous attributes. This spare and slender figure holds a basket in the crook of her elbow, a protective aegis against her chest and a sistrum in her other hand. A suggestion that the basket held kittens seems unfounded, but statuettes of this type do sometimes show the goddess with kittens in front of her, alluding to her fertility. Her dress has a complex striped pattern. Bastet does not always wear a decorated dress, but it is much more common for her than for other goddesses. The patterning highlights its

Shabti of Seniu. Dimensions: H. 27.3 cm (10 3/4 in); w. 8 cm (3 1/8 in); d. 5 cm (1 15/16 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18, early. Reign: reign of Amenhotep I-Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1525-1504 B.C..The shabti of the chief steward and scribe Seniu is a particularly fine example of this type of funerary figurine from the early New Kingdom. It is inscribed with the spell ensuring that the shabti will perform certain kinds of labor for the deceased in the afterlife. This work included maintenance of irrigation canals, and cultivation of the fields. The shabti was discovered during excavations by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition.
