Heqanakht Papyrus Fragments ca. 1961-1917 B.C. Middle Kingdom Heqanakht was a native of Thebes (present day Luxor) during the early 12th Dynasty. As "ka-servant" of a high official he was responsible for the high official's statue cult and the administration of the land and income that had been endowed to maintain this cult. The letters and accounts written by Heqanakht and one or more scribes on sheets of papyrus were discovered by Museum excavator Herbert E. Winlock in the excavation season of 1921-1922 in the tomb of Meseh, who had a side passage and crypt in the tomb complex of the vizier Ipy, one of the rock cut tombs along the cliff overlooking the temples at Deir el-Bahri. The documents - some still folded, tied and sealed, when found - provide unique insights into the domestic and financial affairs of an average middle class family that lived almost four thousand years ago. The few signs preserved in these fragments mention grain and accounting as well as Heqanakht himself.. He

Because papyrus was a costly material, it was normally reserved for important documents such as administrative records and funerary literature. For the same reason, talented artists usually drew the illustrations. This crudely drawn parade of important Egyptian deities is therefore quite surprising. Book of the Dead of Djedkhonsuiuefankh Book of the Dead of Djedkhonsuiuefankh, ca. 945-712 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, Sheet: 8 1/16 x 9 3/4 in. (20.5 x 24.7 cm). The Book of the Dead provided the spells the deceased must know and recite to speed the journey into the afterlife. This copy was made for a highly placed priest of the god Amun. As with most other examples of The Book of the Dead, only a selection of spells is included here. On the left are Spells 15 and 17. The illustration depicts Djedkhonsuiuefankh before the sun god Re-Hor-akhty. The columns of text in the illustration reveal the gods greeting to the deceased and the deceaseds name and genealogy. Heqanakht's account, written over an effaced letter regarding two female servants ca. 1956-1953 B.C Middle Kingdom Heqanakht was a native of Thebes (present day Luxor) during the early Dynasty 12. Letters and accounts written by Heqanakht and one or more scribes on sheets of papyrus were discovered by Museum excavator Herbert E. Winlock in one of the rock cut tomb complexes along the cliff overlooking the temples at Deir el-Bahri. The documents - some still folded, tied and sealed, when found - provide unique insights into the domestic and financial affairs of an average middle class family that lived almost four thousand years ago.In this papyrus, Heqanakht wrote an account of flax and grain, which he sealed with the mud sealing (2018.595.2) whose impression matches that on another letter by him in our collection (22.3.518). However, he was not the first to use this sheet of papyrus. Traces of ink reveal an effaced letter from a man named Intef to a steward by the name of Ineswisetek

Hieratic Papyrus fragment ca. 1183 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside Papyrus was a costly writing material in ancient Egypt. For this reason papyrus documents whose contents were no longer required were retained for further use as scratch paper. This papyrus contains a major and minor text on both the recto and verso. The major texts are a letter between two fan-bearers of the king and a fragmentary record of the cultivation of pharaonic lands in year 16 of Ramesses III; the smaller texts mention the arrival of a shipment of commodities and the quarrying of stone for a tomb. This papyrus joins P. Vienna 38 and belongs to the same archive as a cache of documents discovered at Memphis that record the construction of tombs for several high officials.. Meketre papyrus ca. 1981-1975 B.C. Middle Kingdom This letter was written by Netjeriuhem to an unnamed recipient concerning the sending of the writer's subordinate with various types of birds. Letter written in hieratic script on papyrus ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom In the letter below - written on papyrusa man named Tet tells “his lord” Djehuti in rather forthright terms to rectify a bad situation he had caused by insulting a dependent of the high priest of Heliopolis. The letter was folded and addressed to the recipient on the back of the sheet.Sheets of papyrus - Egypt's primary writing surface - were made from long, thin strips of papyrus fibers, which were cut from the pith of the papyrus stalk once the tough outer rind had been removed. Strips were laid down side by side to form a base layer, and a second layer of strips was placed perpendicularly across the top. The two layers were then pressed or pounded together and allowed to dry. Longer scrolls were produced by gluing together the ends of several sheets. Accounts of workforce salaries ca. 1961-1917 B.C. Middle Kingdom The fragmentary papyrus contains accounts of grain and dates given as salaries to a workforce. The account specifies the amounts given on specific days, ranging from day 20 of the last month of the year through the epagomenal days into the beginning of the new year. The verso of the papyrus mentions dates in the shemu-season (summer).This papyrus was found in a tomb together with another fragmentary papyrus and a few ostraca. These were originally believed to belong to the funerary servants of Harhotep who is buried nearby, but no servant is mentioned in their inscriptions, and the handwriting differs from one text to another.. The Kharoshthi script is an ancient abugida (or 'alphasyllabary') used by the Gandhara culture of Pakistan, nestled in the historic northwest South Asia to write the Gandhari and Sanskrit languages. It was in use from the middle of the 3rd century BCE until it died out in its homeland around the 3rd century CE. It was also in use in Kushan, Sogdiana and along the Silk Road where there is some evidence it may have survived until the 7th century in the remote way stations of Khotan and Niya.

The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus, October 4, 651 B.C.E. Papyrus, pigment, ink, Overall: 10 15/16 × 210 5/16 in. (27.8 × 534.2 cm). The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus records the petition of a man named Pemou on behalf of his father, Harsiese. Harsiese was an ordinary priest in the service of the god Amun-Re at Karnak, but he wished to leave that god's service and join the priesthood of the neighboring temple of Montu-Re-Horakhty. Because temple personnel were seen as the property of the divinity, the god had to be consulted about any change in staff. Pemou asked for the god's advice on behalf of his father, and the god responded favorably. To record the verdict, Pemou had this papyrus drawn up and decorated. The papyrus shows the procession of a image of Amun-Re, the fragments of whose shrine can be seen above the carrying poles borne by the priests.
