Pyramidion of Iufaa 664-525 B.C. Late Period This steep-sided pyramidion is inscribed for Iufaa, a priest of Osiris, ruler of the Netherworld, at his sacred site of Abydos, and originally would have surmounted a memorial chapel at this site. It is decorated on all four faces, with almost identical images on each pair of opposing sides. An inscription at the top of each face gives Iufaa's name and principal title. On two of the sides, Iufaa is shown kneeling with his hands raised in a gesture of adoration before an inscription; on one side this asks that he be given offerings by the god Re-Harakhty. Above, the recumbent figure of a jackal, representing the mortuary god Anubis, perches atop a shrine with a scepter between his forelegs. On the other two sides, a central inscription giving Iufaa's name, titles, and filiation, is flanked by two baboons (one to each side), making gestures of praise. Horses Harnessed to a Chariot ca. 1353-1336 B.C. New Kingdom, Amarna Period Numerous representations of horse-drawn chariots are included in the official scenes at Amarna. Both the king and queen are shown driving themselves in what appears to be a mad dash to the Great Temple, their attendants racing behind. In its way, the arrival by chariot, in the view of the populace, constitutes a kind of procession that replaces the processions of divine images in traditional Egyptian religion. Throughout Egyptian history, artists took great care in depicting animals, a tradition that was continued and expanded during the Amarna period. On this fragment, a pair of horses are at rest, probably waiting outside the entrance to the temple for the reemergence of the royal family. The artist has depicted the instant one horse nibbles at its leg. This capturing of a moment in time, though not found exclusively in the art of Amarna, probably would not have appeared in a ceremonial context in any other p

Panel with Geometric Pattern and Benedictory Inscriptions late 13th-mid-14th century This limestone panel exemplifies the style of ornament found on carved surfaces, textiles, and decorative arts in Spain from 1232 to 1492 under the Nasrids, the last of the Muslim dynasties to rule in the Iberian Peninsula. Although fragmentary, the piece retains enough of its original length to reveal the designs. The rectangular panel is carved on three sides. On one of the wide sides is a band of squared interlace; on the other, a tall band of repeating eight-pointed stars and cartouches, both enclosing a knot pattern, with a guilloche border. The Kufic inscription on the adjacent narrow edge repeats the Arabic word al-afiyya (good health). Several fourteenth-century tombstones in the Museo de la Alhambra in Granada have similar geometric ornament, but their inscriptions are rendered in a rounded script called Naskh. New Kingdom, Amarna Period This fragment probably comes from a divine standard that was part of a standing statue of Haremhab, last king of Dynasty 18. The preserved inscription describes the king as "beloved of Thoth, Lord of Hermopolis, he who is in the midst of the Hare Nome." This suggests that the statue was made for the temple of Thoth at his cult center in Hermopolis (modern el-Ashmunein) which was capital of the ancient Egyptian province known as the Hare Nome.. Tomb of Ramesses III, Pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty in Ancient Egypt. reigned from 1186 to 1155 BC and is considered to be the last monarch of the New Kingdom to wield any substantial authority over Egypt.
