Battle scene of Assyrians storming a citadel ca. 704-681 B.C. Assyrian This relief fragment dates to the time of Sennacherib (r. 704-681 B.C.), and comes from the great Southwest Palace, called by Sennacherib the "Palace Without Rival," at Nineveh. It depicts several groups of Assyrian soldiers attacking a large fortified city. At left, kneeling archers shoot volleys of arrows toward defenders, not preserved in this fragment, on the battlements, while at right archers advance up a siege ramp, using tall curved shields as cover. Behind them on the ramp are soldiers using slings to hurl projectiles up at the defenders. At far right can be seen traces of a second group of soldiers advancing up a ramp, in this case spearmen with distinctive crested helmets; other reliefs show they would also have held circular shields. In the foreground, some men carry on their backs what appear to be large slabs for building siege ramps, while others lay down layers of palm fronds as matting in the ramps

Monumental blocks decorated with stylized trees to which heads wearing Phrygian caps and an Amazon shield (pelte) are suspended. It could be a monument devoted to the cult of Autis (God Phrygian). This God is wearing the Phrygian cap and represented (only once) with the face covered with a theater mask. The reed and the shield participate in the theme of this cult. The iconography would be illustrated by one of the rites attached to the cult of Attis and more particularly from the festival of cannophores. Magical Figure ca. 1802-1550 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period These tablets of unfired clay with attached crude faces were found as a group by the Museum's excavators at Lisht South in loose surface sand west of the mastaba of Senwosretankh, a high official and possibly the architect of the pyramid complex of Senwosret I (ca. 1961-1917 B. C.), east of which he erected his own very elaborate mastaba tomb (see acc. nos. 33.1.2 and other pieces). The mud figures and little coffin (acc. no. 33.1.66) that had contained some of them must have been buried, however, considerably later than the early twelfth dynasty tomb close to which they were found. In fact, during the thirteenth and following dynasties people deposited a number of objects in the by then sacred area around a legendary ruler's pyramid and its dependant monuments, believing conceivably that potent magical powers could thus be released. Old Assyrian Trading Colony Kültepe, the ancient city of Kanesh, was part of the network of trading settlements established in central Anatolia by merchants from Ashur (in Assyria in northern Mesopotamia) in the early second millennium B.C. Travelling long distances, and often living separately from their families, these merchants traded vast quantities of goods, primarily tin and textiles, for Anatolian copper and other materials. Although the merchants adopted many aspects of local Anatolian life, they brought with them Mesopotamian tools used to record transactions: cuneiform writing, clay tablets and envelopes, and cylinder seals. This bas-relief was excavated in northern Syria at the site of Tell Halaf, the capital of a small independent city-state known as Guzana, which was conquered by the Assyrians in the late 9th century BC. More than two hundred such stone reliefs (styled orthostats) decorated the facade of a temple-palace built in the 10th century BCE by a local ruler named Kapara. He reused the blocks from one or more pre-existing structures and carved an inscription in cuneiform on each one statings, 'Palace of Kapara, son of Hadianu'. The blocks were placed so that limestone ones painted red alternated with others of black basalt. In this image, a rider sits atop the hump of a dromedary camel, driving it on with a staff. Crossed leather or cloth bands fasten the saddle to the animal. The image represents an Arab caravan trader. Wall decoration with geometric and vegetal design ca. 6th century A.D. Sasanian Stucco reliefs were commonly used to decorate the iwans and reception halls of elite Sasanian houses. Many examples were found in excavated houses in the Ctesiphon area including this fragment from Umm ez-Zatir consisting of a vine with half palmettes between borders of a meander pattern. The use of molds to make stuccos allowed for the creation of large scale repetitive patterns such as geometric and vegetal motifs. The city of Ctesiphon was located on the east bank of the Tigris River, 20 miles (32 km) south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. It flourished for more than 800 years as the capital of the Parthians and the Sasanians, the last two dynasties to rule the ancient Near East before the Islamic conquest in the seventh century. Relief 15th-early 16th century Aztec () Low-relief carvings adorn two of the six sides of this fragmentary stone block. Its main motifs consist of a butterfly (left) and ilhuitl, or day sign, framed by plain rectangular bands. Similar designs appear on other Postclassic period (ca. 900-1521) monuments but are often arranged in bands along the exteriors of boxes or sacrificial vessels (cuauhxicalli). Called "celestial belts," these sequences of symbols (glyphs) are thought to have had astrological importance for the Nahua- and Mixtec-speakers of the Central and Southern Mexican Highlands.Butterfly imagery enjoyed a long history in the arts of Mesoamerica and probably had multiple meanings and associations through time. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments.
