Hatshepsut in a Devotional Attitude ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom For the ancient Egyptians, the ideal king was a young man in the prime of life. The physical reality was of less importance, so an old man, a child, or even a woman who held the titles of pharaoh could be represented in this ideal form, as in this representation of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Although many of Hatshepsut's statues depict her as the ideal king, the inscriptions always allude to her feminine gender, sometimes by using both masculine and feminine grammatical forms, sometimes by including her personal name, Hatshepsut, which means "foremost of noble women."This statue was one of a pair that stood on either side of a granite doorway on the upper terrace of Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el-Bahri. She is represented wearing a king's nemes-headcloth, false beard, and shendyt-kilt. Child god in nemes and hemhem 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The figure represents a child god in a seated/reclining position, wearing the hemhem crown with the nemes. The child god is usually distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and the thick sidelock attached on the right side of his nemes. Here the figures hands are both held at the sides, but his nudity and sidelock suffice to identify him as a child god. Child gods are commonly linked with royalty and this gods hemhem is an elaborate royal crown with solar associations, here emphasized not just by the sun disks at the top of the crown, but also by incised sun disks at the base of each hem element. Meanwhile, the child gods plump, well-fed belly showcases his ability to bring about prosperity and abundance. A suspension loop rests at the base of the crown. On the back of the small piece is a back pillar, which is pierced for suspension, so that the piece could be placed on a string. This amulet was worn by a person during live and/or placed on a mummy. Statue of a goddess, probably Nehemetaui or Nebethetepet 550-300 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The shrine-shaped sistrum sound-box worn as a crown by this figure indicates that either the goddess Nehemet-aui, the consort of Thoth, or Nebethetepet, a manifestation of Hathor, is represented. The features of the goddess suggest a date to the end of the 26th dynasty, or the 30th dynasty. Nefertum 664-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The god Nefertum was born out of a lotus flower on the mound of creation; thus he was closely connected with the sun, creation, and with the lotus, but also, more broadly, sweet-smelling, pleasant things. Nefertum was the son of Ptah and of the lion-goddess Sakhmet, and is sometimes envisioned as the son of Bastet or certain other great female lion goddesses. He had a martial aspect, but also a protective one, mirroring some of the contrasting but complementary qualities of Sakhmet and Bastet. Female figurine 1400-1533 Inca This female figurine resembles other Inca metal figurines, often associated with the ritual performance of capac hucha, in terms of its appearance and design. Made of hammered sheet, of the approximate composition of 52% silver and 44% gold, by XRF, the figurine shows a woman standing with arms and hands close to the chest. Her hair is pulled back, extending to the lower back, into two tresses that have been tied at this end. Capac hucha has been defined in varied ways by 16th century Spanish chroniclers (Cieza de León 1959, 190-193; Diez de Betanzos 1996, 46, 132), but they note that it typically involves offerings in Cusco or in provincial regions made in honor of the Sun or in reverence of the Sapa Inca, the paramount Inca ruler. Third Intermediate Period The Priestess of Amun, Djedmutesankh, was buried with a number of other members of her wealthy extended family in a tomb on the West Bank at Thebes. Her coffins were found in the main burial chamber, between the coffins of Henettawy, daughter of Painedjem, and Henettawy, daughter of Isetemkheb.Djedmutesankh's outer coffin, designed to ensure her successful transition from death to eternal life, was covered with linen and paste, painted in reds, greens, and blues on a pale yellow background, and then covered with varnish that has darkened over time. The face, fillet, earrings, breasts, and hands were gilded, as befit her status and wealth; these elements were chopped off in antiquity by thieves. Worker Shabti of Nany ca. 1050 B.C. Third Intermediate Period Seven shabti boxes were interred with Nany; five came to New York in the division of finds (30.3.26-.30), two of them are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. All are made of sycamore wood and have high ends and flat lids. A white stucco wash was applied after the lids were closed. The shabtis, made of faience, were packed tightly in each box, in an upright position. They are of two types: foremen and workmen, with a ratio of one forman to ten workers (see 30.3.28a-h).. Figure 7th-10th century Veracruz The modern state of Veracruz lies along the Mexican Gulf Coast, north of the Maya lowlands and east of the highlands of central Mexico. Culturally diverse and environmentally rich, the people of Veracruz took part in dynamic interchanges between the three regions that over the centuries included trade, warfare, and migration. During the middle centuries of the first millennium, the artistically gifted Veracruzanos created particularly inventive ceramic sculpture in diverse yet related styles. Each of these three standing figures is unique, but they share many details: the curled hair (or hats with curls) with traces of white coloring, the barlike chest ornaments, the projecting ear ornaments, and the elaborate belts or loincloths. The wide mouths are open to show off sparkling teeth that have been blackened with hematite crystals, which are rare on Veracruz ceramic figures. Plaque fragment: kneeling lion-headed figure ca. 18th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This figure belongs to a group of carved ivories, mostly furniture elements, probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Most of the ivories depict imagery borrowed and transformed from Egyptian sources, such as the hybrid creature shown here who combines human and lion features. In Egypt, representations of lioness goddesses appeared as early as the Old Kingdom. This creature, with its kneeling posture and closed mouth, indicated by a diagonal groove, does not appear menacing. Its identity is mysterious, but it appears to have symbolized a benevolent force.The plaque has attachment holes at top and bottom, and probably was used to decorate a piece of furniture. Its overall gray color indicates that the object was exposed to considerable heat, perhaps during the destruction of the palace.
