Recumbent Lion. Dimensions: L. 201 cm (79 1/8 in); w. 73 cm (28 3/4 in); h. 87 cm (34 1/4 in). Dynasty: early dynasty 4-5. Date: ca. 2575-2450 B.C..This imposing lion figure must once have guarded the entrance to a pyramid-age sanctuary. As the most powerful predator of the steppe bordering the Nile valley, the lion was a symbol of royalty from early on. The animal-especially the female-also embodied a number of deities. This sculpture is the earliest extant example of monumental size that has been preserved almost in its entirety. It was excavated by the British Egypt Exploration Fund in 1891 at Herakleopolis Magna, southeast of the Fayum oasis. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Plaque with a striding sphinx ca. 8th century B.C. Assyrian On this finely carved shell plaque, a striding sphinx is represented above a plain border. Sphinxes are mythological animals with a lions body and the head of a human, or sometimes another type of animal such as a ram, and can be depicted with or without wings. This sphinx has wings and the head of a beardless human, whose hair is shown as a mass of curly locks covering the back of the neck, recalling figures from the monumental stone reliefs that decorated Assyrian palaces. Details such as the individual wing feathers and the textured fur on the legs and belly are incised. The plaques original purpose is unknown, but like many pieces of carved shell or ivory from the Assyrian royal buildings at Nimrud it may have been used as a decoration for furniture or luxury objects..
