Head of a king as Khepri, possibly Ptolemy VI Philometor 180-145 B.C. Ptolemaic or Roman Period Ptolemy VI Philometor ascended the throne as a child and his mother, Cleopatra I, acted as regent. He married his sister, Cleopatra II, and ruled jointly with her. A scarab beetle designating the god Khepri is carved in relief on top of this royal head, which belongs stylistically to the Ptolemaic Period. The representation of the pharaoh as Khepri, a creative god, has a long history, although it has been suggested the representation here is tied more specificially to the Ptolemy VI, one of whose names refers to Ptah-Khepri.. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period The head is one of a class of objects referred to by the double designation sculptor's model / votive because they provide contradictory indications. However, recent research very strongly points to a ritual function for those that depict royalty in connection with royal hypostases that multiply in the last dynasties and the early Ptolemaic Period. The clearest indication of this is the down-hanging snake rather than the typical uraeus over the serene countenance, but the crown is a secondary marker.. Shawabti figures in the form of King Tutankhamen

Mask of Iineferty ca. 1279-1213 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside This elegant mask of cartonnage was placed over the head of Iineferty's mummy. She is shown wearing a long braided wig with decorative bands just below chin level and a floral fillet surmounted by a lotus blossom, symbolic of rebirth. Her face is framed by separate locks of hair that end in thin pigtails, characteristic of the late 18th and 19th Dynasties. The lower part of the mask takes the shape of a floral collar that would have fit over Iineferty's shoulders.Other objects in the collection that were discovered in the same tomb can be viewed here.. Head of an "Ethiopian" depicted in Hellenistic mode 332-30 B.C. Ptolemaic Period Black Africans were considered distant and exotic and were termed 'Ethiopians' by the ancient Greeks when Greek artists formulated a distinct iconography for these peoples. This was well before the cosmopolitan Hellenistic period, when regular interaction with African realms like Egypt and Nubia had become the norm. (See the Timeline of Art History essay Africans in Ancient Greek Art)This beautiful head of an "Ethiopian" was created as an attachment for some luxurious object suited to a Hellenistic Greek milieu like that of Alexandria. A gold plug remains in the top of the head, and on the back twin loops were broken away. Possibly the head was part of a richly ornamented serving dish: for example, a head with a loop and ring decorates the rim next to the handle on one elaborate dish from Pompeii.. Antefix with Satyr Face, c. 525-480 BC. Greek/South Italian, Taranto. Terracotta; overall: 25 cm (9 13/16 in.). This frontal satyr face, easily recognized by its snub nose and equine ears, served numerous purposes. As an antefix, it capped the open end of a roof tile, preventing wind, water, and pests from entering the building below. With its naturalistic mold-made features, enhanced with pigment and perhaps additional stamped and carved details, the antefix would also have provided striking visual ornament, especially when seen in long rows high above.

Pair Statue of Neferkhawet and Rennefer ca. 1479-1450 B.C. New Kingdom This finely carved pair statue depicts the "House Mistress, Rennefer," and the "Overseer of Craftsmen, Neferkhawet." Rennefer, seated at the left, occupies the dominant position more commonly held by the man. This unusual configuration may reflect the fact that the inscribed dedication was made by the couple's daughter, Ruiu, instead of by a son. The statue is carved from granodiorite, an unusual choice for such statues, which were usually made of limestone or sandstone. The sculptor appears to have taken advantage of a vein of pink feldspar to create the illusion of the broad beaded necklaces, known as broad collars, that were part of the formal costume of funerary statues. The statue was intended for a funerary chapel where offerings would have been left for the deceased, and all the flat surfaces have been inscribed with prayers for the deceased or with images of the couples extended family. Outer Coffin of Khonsu. Dimensions: H. 200 cm (78 3/4 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 19. Reign: reign of Ramesses II. Date: ca. 1279-1213 B.C..The Servitor in the Place of Truth, Khonsu, the son of Sennedjem and Iineferty, was buried in his father's tomb. His mummy, covered by a mummy mask and laid in the wooden inner coffin, indicated that he was between fifty and sixty yeas old at his death. This coffin shows the deceased wearing a tripartite striated wig and holding in his right hand the djed symbol for "stability," and tit, for "protection," in his left. For the inner coffin of Khonsu see 86.1.2a, b. Other objects in the collection that were discovered in the same tomb are numbered 86.1.1-86.1.29. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Shabti of Nesbanebdjed ca. 380-342 B.C Late Period This shabti comes from a tomb discovered in 1902 at the site of the ancient city of Mendes (Tell el-Ruba), the capital of Egypt for a short time during the Late Period. One of the two chambers of the tomb was almost completely empty, with only a few fragments of gold leaf left behind. In the second chamber were over 360 complete shabtis, plus a number of fragments. Most were inscribed, like this one, for the priest Nesbanebdjed. Of these shabtis, 322 had the type of T-shaped inscription seen here (see also 10.130.1044a). About 100 of Nesbanebdjeds shabtis remained in Egypt; many more can be found in museum and private collections around the world.Nesbanebdjeds priestly titles associate him with the cult of the ram-god Banebdjed, who was part of the Mendesian triad with the goddess Hatmehyt and the child god Harpocrates.. Head from an Osiride Statue of Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This head originally belonged to one of the Osiride statues that were carved in high relief in niches along the rear wall of the upper terrace of Hatshepsut's temple at Deir el Bahri. Hatshepsut wears the Double Crown of Upper and Lower Egypt suggesting that the head was from a figure in one of the niches on the northern side of the terrace. Another head, 31.3.163, wears the White Crown of Upper Egypt and came from a niche on the southern side. These Osiride figures were architectural accents rather than freestanding statues and were carved from the same limestone blocks that were used to construct the temple itself. Four Osiride statues decorated the corners of the temple's shrine of Amun (31.3.153-.155), and a series of much larger statues were attached to the pillars at the front of the upper terrace (31.3.156, 31.3.158, 31.3.159).. Statue of a kouros. Naxian marble, found in Sounion. The statue was a votive offering to Poseidon and stood before his temple. Its over-life-size scale is striking and testifies to the tendency of early Archaic sculptors to create impressive colossal statues, about 600 BC.

Naos Sistrum with the name of Apries. Dimensions: h. 34.7 cm (13 11/16 in); w. 8.5 cm (3 3/8 in); d. 4.2 cm (1 5/8 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 26. Reign: reign of Apries. Date: 589-570 B.C..This sistrum exemplifies the developed form of the naos sistrum as it is known from the Middle Kingdom. Above the handle appears the face of a woman with cow ears wearing a straight wig. A cornice above her head carries a naos, or shrine, whose center is open, except for the uraeus appearing in the opening. Tall inward spiraling elements appear on either side of the shrine.The face is the fetish of the goddess Bat, a frontal female face with cow ears and tall horns; the tall volutes beside the shrine seem to be derived from Bat's tall horns. Although Bat was a separate goddess until the Dynasty 11, probably her similar identity as a cow goddess along with other factors led to the adoption of her fetish for the naos sistrum that was already associated with Hathor. Head of a beardless royal attendant, possibly a eunuch ca. 721-705 B.C. Assyrian Soon after taking the throne, the Assyrian king Sargon II (r. 721-705 B.C.) founded a new capital city, Dur-Sharrukin (literally "fortress of Sargon"), at a site known today as Khorsabad. Sargon took the throne in a coup against his brother, Shalmaneser V (r. 726-722 B.C.), and it is possible that by moving to a new capital he hoped to consolidate his regime. The name Sargon, meaning "true king," was a throne name, and referred to a very ancient king, Sargon of Akkad, who by the Neo-Assyrian period was remembered as a legendary hero. Building work at Dur-Sharrukin continued throughout Sargons reign, with not only a main palace but a constellation of palaces and temples as well as the city itself under construction. Funerary Figure of Duamutef ca. 400-30 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period This jackal-headed figure represents the god Duamutef, who protected the stomach. He is one of the four so-called sons of Horus that are often depicted as mummies, each with a different head (for the other three statuettes belonging to the same set, see 12.182.37b-d). The sons of Horus were deities who protected the internal organs and are probably best known from their representations on the lids of the canopic jars that contained mummified viscera. They were also thought to assist in the process of mummification and to provide nourishment, possibly because they were associated with the internal organs. Thus they had a general protective function for the deceased.In this particular statuette, note the jackal-headed gods fur peeking out from underneath his long human wig..
