Tusk with Figurative Relief Kongo artist ca. 1880-1890 The scenes carved on this tusk correspond to recurrent imagery of nineteenth-century Western illustrations, including depictions of Roman gods in the bottom four registers of the tusk. Coupled with images of enslavement, colonial splendor, and trade, this diverse imagery has been interpreted as a narrative of progress. Slavery is portrayed as a brutal and uncivilized historical practice, eliminated through colonial development. On the second register from the top, an African man is threatened with a sword, choked, and detained while two women look on with distress at the capture of their loved one. Juxtaposed against the sale of textiles in the third register, slavery is positioned as a bi-product of African greed. As an object produced for export, it was carved with a European clientele in mind. The narratives reinforce the Belgian colonial mission as a civilizing force. Despite these representations, Belgian colonialism is rememb

Cow's Head from a frontal representation of a cow emerging from a wall 664-610 B.C. Late Period, Saite Recent work at the tomb of Nespekashuty (see 23.3.468) has shown that this cow head, excavated by the Museum in the 1920s, stood over a statue of a wrapped figure. The cow was rendered as if emerging from the north wall false-door niche in the second room of the tomb and the wrapped figure, representing the tomb owner Nespekashuty, stood against its breast.Cow statues protecting the king were associated with the worship of Hathor in the mountain at Deir el-Bahri in Thebes since the Middle Kingdom. In the Ramesside Period such statues of Hathor protecting the king were included in a few non-royal tombs at Saqqara, and by the late Ramesside Period an example is known that depicts the cow protecting a non-royal person. Hathoric imagery remained popular during the Third Intermediate Period, but decorated tombs only resumed with the Kushite-Saite Period. With that, cow statues appeared aga

Figure Fragment: Leopard Head early 17th century () Edo peoples At its origins, the centralized city-state of Benin was founded by Edo-speaking peoples. The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benin’s rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benin’s armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken. In parallel, delegations of Portuguese traders assiduously sought to secure exc

Openwork furniture plaque showing a cow suckling a calf ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian During the early first millennium B.C., ivory carving was one of the major luxury arts that flourished throughout the ancient Near East. Elephant tusks were carved into small decorative objects such as cosmetic boxes and plaques used to adorn wooden furniture. Gold foil, paint, and semiprecious stone and glass inlay embellishments enlivened these magnificent works of art. Based on certain stylistic, formal, and technical characteristics also visible in other media, scholars have distinguished several coherent style groups of ivory carving that belong to different regional traditions including Assyrian, Phoenician, North Syrian and South Syrian (the latter also known as Intermediate).Several ivories in the Metropolitan Museums collection are from the Aramaean town of Arslan Tash, ancient Hadatu, in northern Syria just east of the Euphrates River, close to the modern Turkish border. Furniture element: human head ca. 18th century B.C. Old Assyrian Trading Colony This fragment belongs to a group of carved ivories, mostly furniture elements, probably found at the site of a palace at Acemhöyük in central Anatolia. Carved in the round, the piece shows a beardless human head with short but voluminous hair. The eyebrows meet in the middle above large, wide-open eyes, in which the pupils have been drilled to receive inlays in another material, now missing. The nose is prominent and the mouth is small and tight-lipped. The top of the head is flattened and drilled with a vertical hole, probably for attachment to another element. The pink staining of this piece indicates that iron oxides are present on the surface, although it is not known whether this was a deliberate decorative treatment, or a result of contact with the soil in which this and other pieces of carved ivory from Acemhöyük were buried.. Furniture element: human head 323577
