Statuette of Reniseneb ca. 1850-1650 B.C. Late Middle Kingdom This small wooden sculpture depicts a young girl. Her youth is signified through the braided lock on the side of her head, which was customary for children in ancient Egypt. Underneath her tight-fitting dress her body is clearly shown. Her arms were made as separate pieces; on her left side is still the ancient peg that served to attach her now missing left arm. The high quality of the piece is apparent in the delicate modelling of the facial features. The figurine is inserted into a separately made rectangular base. On its top are three lines of a hieroglyphic inscription, which gives her name as Reniseneb, and also mentions her mother, Wesermut.. Statuette of Reniseneb. ca. 1850-1650 B.C.. Wood, paint. Harpokrates in red crown. Dimensions: H. 13.2 cm (5 3/16 in.); W. 3.1 cm (1 1/4 in.); D. 4.7 cm (1 7/8 in.). Date: 664-30 B.C..The figure represents a child god in a striding/standing position, wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt, which alludes to his royal status. The child god is distinguished from adult gods by a range of iconographic clues: his nudity, the finger raised to the mouth (a child-like gesture), and the sidelock on the right side of his head. He wears an amulet, an attribute common to child gods but not adult gods, as well as a streamer on the back of his crown, armlets and bracelets. Child gods grew in popularity and cult from the Third Intermediate Period onwards, rivaling even the most powerful and ancient gods, especially as temple offerings. Without an inscription, it can be very difficult to securely distinguish and identify particular child gods, but here the red crown likely identifies the god as Harpokrates (Horus the Child), who was the son of Osiris and Isi

New Kingdom, Ramesside At the top of this menat, or necklace counterpoise, is the head of a lion-headed goddess, wearing a broad collar and crowned with a sun disk. A relief scene showing a lion-headed goddess seated on a throne and holding a papyrus scepter decorates the menats center section. Date: 664-30 B.C..Osiris, foremost of the Egyptian funerary gods and ruler of the underworld, stands upright in a close-fitting mummiform garment. The garment has a prominent stiff upper edge along the back of the neck, a feature that occurs with some regularity on this garment, but one with an unclear meaning. Two streamers drape down the back of the garment. His hands emerge from long vertical slits in the cloak, which are visible on the chest. The god holds the royal crook and flail with his hands poised asymmetrically. The base is inscribed.In general, Osiris statuettes were some of the most abundant temple offerings in Egypt by the first millennium B.C., reflecting both the god's importance and changing cult practices that spurred the wide-scale dedication of deity statuettes. Seated Figure A.D. 700-1600 Late Quimbaya This figure shows a person in a seated pose. It is primarily made of fired clay and was produced by people living in the middle Cauca River Valley and parts of the Central Cordillera of Colombia, often referred to as the "Quimbaya" region. The eyes and mouth consist of narrow horizontal linear incisions, while the nose is rounded and projects outward. A metal ring has been threaded through the nostrils. The figures arms are bent and turn inward, with the hands resting on the knees, which are bent. There are seven circular perforations along the top of the figures head, while there are four across the forehead, two above the chest, two more at the waist, and one on the bottom of the figure. With the exceptions of those on the top of the head and the bottom of the figure, all the perforations extend entirely through the figure. Seated figure of Amun First half of First Millennium B.C. Third Intermediate Period or Saite Period An expertly carved figure of Amun, principal deity of the Egyptian pantheon from the New Kingdom (ca. 1500 B.C.) on. The youthful-looking god is seated on a low-backed throne covered with a feather pattern, with the lungs and windpipe of an animal that symbolized a unified Egypt carved on each side. A textile adorned with a pattern of lotus blossoms on the back is depicted as if thrown over the back of the seat. Female Bes ca. 1981-1640 B.C. Middle Kingdom Despite its ruined state, this little statue is a plaintive witness to the role of magic in ancient Egyptian health. It was found in the Middle Kingdom cemetery at Lisht, where it had been placed either in a grave or as an offering above a tomb. The figure's lion mane and ears are those of the god Bes (see 1989.281.94), but its body is quite unlike the round, dwarfish torso with which the god is regularly depicted suggesting that it represents the god's much rarer female counterpart, Beset. Like Bes, this goddess was a guardian of mothers during and after childbirth and of their infants. In the cemetery, Beset's presence would have offered the same protection to the deceased in their daily rebirth to new life as a spirit.. Female Bes 548234

Funerary amulet depicting one of the Four Sons of Horus, Duamutef 332-30 B.C. Ptolemaic Period This jackal-headed figure represents the god Duamutef, who protected the stomach. He is one of the four so-called sons of Horus that are often depicted as mummies, each with a different head. The sons of Horus were deities who protected the internal organs and are probably best known from their representations on the lids of the canopic jars that contained mummified viscera. They were also thought to assist in the process of mummification and to provide nourishment, possibly because they were associated with the internal organs. Thus they had a general protective function for the deceased. Here Duamutef is depicted holding a long piece of fabric, which represents the linen used in the mummification ritual.. Pair of Seated Figures, 100 BC-AD 300. Mexico, Nayarit, 1st century BC-4th century AD. Ceramic; average: 52.3 x 30.5 x 29.5 cm (20 9/16 x 12 x 11 5/8 in.); part 2: 56 x 31.8 x 30.5 cm (22 1/16 x 12 1/2 x 12 in.). This couple-extremely fine examples of their kind-may commemorate the marriage of an important person, such as a chief, but could also represent siblings of a chiefly family. Whatever their relationship, their unity is conveyed by their physical similarities, including their jewelry, which marks high social station. The female is unusual in nursing an infant, likely a reference to generational renewal and the continuation of noble bloodlines. The significance of the males activity-beating a turtle-shell drum- is not understood.

Shell Mosaic Ritual Mask 300 CE-600 CE Teotihuacán. Teotihuacan, the ruins of which are located near Mexico City, was one of the largest and most complex cities in the world during the first millennium AD. Although this mask shares features common to others from the cityóa broad forehead, prominent nose, receding chin, and widely spaced cheekbonesóit is subtly unique, indicating that it may represent a stylized portrait. Tied to wooden armatures adorned with feathers, jewelry, and garments, such masks were displayed in residential compounds and temples where they were the focus of rituals commemorating ancestors who acted as intermediaries between the living and the deified forces of nature. An older, recut stone mask was covered with mosaic tiles made from the inner layer of spondylus shell imported from the Pacific coast. The use of this exotic material suggests the far-reaching power, author¨ity, and wealth of Teotihuacan. Spondylus was also considered sacred, associating this mask
