Relief Plaque with head of a goddess or a queen ca. 400-200 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves complete objects constitute a special class of objects. These objects, sometimes called "sculptor's models/votives" by Egyptologists, were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with these centuries' prolific temple building. Unfortunately, there is little to illuminate us about the mechanics of such a donation practice. This example depicts a head wearing the vulture headgear, a sign of queenship and divinity.. Date: 9th-11th century ().This enigmatic head and torso is one of a group of eleven stone figures discovered in 1894 on Necker Island, a barren outcrop of rock 300 miles northwest of the Hawai'ian islands. Necker was once inhabited by Polynesian settlers who built temple platforms and carved stone figures from the local basaltic rock, but the island was abandoned several centuries prior to European contact. Therefore, the precise identity and function of the Necker Island figures, which may date from about A.D.1000, is unknown. Because they were found in association with temple platforms, it is likely that the figures are images of gods or deified ancestors that were used during religious ceremonies. Terracotta mold for a relief applique 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D. Roman, Gallic The Roman pottery of the Rhone Valley is characterized by the profligate use of relief medallions applied to the exterior surface of their vases. This mold was likely used to make such a medallion, and there is another identical example as well, now in the Musee de Saint Germain, Iseres, France. This ancient clay mold (and the modern plaster case made from it displayed nearby) attests to the iconographical and pictorial complexity of such reliefs. The scene depicted here shows Mercury with his herald's staff, wearing a cape and winged shoes, seated on a rock in his sanctuary, indicated by the temple facade in upper left. He sits before a flaming altar, at which a sacrifice in his honor is being performed by a draped male figure, while a flute player provides musical accompaniment. Bronze statuette of a reclining satyr 6th century B.C. Etruscan This delightful pair of satyrs, one playing the Pan pipes while reclining on a wineskin and the other holding a drinking horn, probably once decorated the rim of a large bronze vessel. These devotees of Dionysos, god of wine, are appropriate subjects on a vase used to serve that drink. Their style suggests a workshop in one of the major cities of Northern Etruria, perhaps Chiusi.. Date: ca. 1353-1336 B.C..This torso from a statue of Akhenaten was found in the Sanctuary of the Great Aten Temple or in the dump south of the Sanctuary area of the temple. The heavy breasts and sagging belly of the king are typical of his representation, a feminized body that may suggest his fertile receptiveness to life and divine inspiration from the Aten.The statue appears to have been standing with its arms held naturally so that they hung slightly forward, a realistic pose developed by Amarna artists. Like all images of the king and queen, but not the princesses, the torso is inscriped with pairs of Aten cartouches on its chest. In addition the names of the god appear on the preserved upper arm (and would have appeared also on the missing arm and on both wrists), on the king's belt, and at the top of the backpillar
