Artist's Sketches of Senenmut, sketch of small rodent on opposite sie ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom Ostraca are chips of limestone or fragments of pottery that were used as writing surfaces by ancient Egyptian scribes, or as sketch pads by artists. Despite the lack of any identifying text, the double profile on this ostracon can easily be identified as Senenmut, one of Hatshepsut's well-known courtiers. The profiles are similar to the representation of Senenmut on another ostracon in the Museum's collection (36.3.252) and to a drawing on a wall in his tomb (fig. 1). On the back of this ostracon is a sketch that depicts a small rodent. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #3385. Figure Vessel. Culture: Huastec. Dimensions: H. 13 1/2 x W. 10 x D. 7 1/2 in. (34.3 x 25.4 x 19.1 cm). Date: 16th century ().This vessel depicts a nude, pear-shaped male figure in a squatting position with both hands raised to either side of his large head. His fingers, indicated by incisions and paint, touch to form an "O" and each palm is pierced with a small hole. Covered with a base layer of yellow-buff slip, his corpulent, almost infantile body is decorated with an array of dark maroon lines, circles, and scalloped motifs representing body paint or tattoos. Like an animal seated on its haunches, the figure's stout thighs and paw-like feet are drawn close to his flanks, framing his round belly and modeled genitalia.Viewed from the front, the vessel's curved face obscures much of the open neck and short, shoulder-mounted spout of the jug. As the viewer approaches, however, the back edge of the central void gradually appears to fill the holes of his slackened mouth and hollow orbits,

Study Models of Parts of the Body. This group of small models of parts of the body are carefully copied after famous sculptures, in particular by Michelangelo, in Florence and Rome. They came from the workshop of the Nijmegen sculptor Johan Gregor van der Schardt, who had a successful career in Italy, Nuremberg, and Copenhagen. They are extremely rare examples of the, in part autograph, study material of a 16th-century sculptor.

Marble head of a baby. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: 3 7/8 × 2 3/4 × 3 3/4 in. (9.8 × 7 × 9.5 cm). Date: 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D..Portraits of small children are not uncommon in Greek and Roman art. Here, however, the subject is not a small child, but, rather, an infant. The full cheeks and the still scarcely articulated chin and jowl indicate that the baby can be only a few months old. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Reconstruction of a Cog-wheels Lantern Mechanism based upon a drawing by Leonardo Da Vinci; Codex Atlanticus - folio 4 v. This mechanism, already widely used in Leonardo's time, shows us how passionate he was about the friction, performance and wear of cog-wheels for transferring circular motion from one plane to another. The Cog-wheels Lantern Mechanism meant that a motion in a vertical plane could be changed into a motion in a horizontal one..

Elderly Man Flanked by Egyptian Gods. Dimensions: H. 38 cm. (14 15/16 in.); W. 22.4 cm (8 13/16 in.). Date: ca. A.D. 250.This old man is painted in tempera on a fairly thick wooden panel. Drawn in black ink above his left shoulder is the falcon god Horus before a horned altar. Above his right shoulder is a ram wearing the composite atef crown. The ram represents a deity of the underworld (either the ba, or soul, of the sun god Re by night or the god Khnum) and is juxtaposed with Horus, a sky god. Tempera portraits are matte and lack the relief effect created by encaustic paints. The tempera technique has long roots in Egyptian tradition. Because the medium does not cover well, wood panels were usually covered first with white gesso to enhance the colors. Because colors dry quickly and do not blend as encaustic does, tones were achieved by overpainting thin layers of color. Judging from its thickness and the five holes, this panel was tied onto a mummy or coffin rather than inserted w

Seated female ca. 5600-5000 B.C. Halaf Distinctive clay female figures like this one were produced at sites belonging to the Halaf culture. This example displays a strong stylization with an emphasis on the sexual features. She sits with her large thighs extended, supporting her breasts with her arms; neither hands nor feet are shown. Her head is missing; in other figures of this type when the head is intact, it is elongated into a large noselike projection but otherwise is featureless. Remains of paint may represent jewelry. The meaning of such representations is unknown but may be connected with fertility. The stylized depiction of the nude female form remained an artistic convention in northern Syria, Anatolia, and the Aegean for several millennia.. Seated female. Halaf. ca. 5600-5000 B.C.. Ceramic, paint. Halaf. Mesopotamia or Syria

Lamb second half 18th century Italian, Naples In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions. Their bodies are made of tow and wire, their arms and legs are finely carved of wood, and their heads and shoulders are modeled of te
