Seated tambourine player 12th century The representation of courtly life and activities was a very popular subject for artists working in the medieval Islamic period. Within this setting, a particularly favored subject is the depiction of musicians, such as the seated tambourine player seen here. This piece is unusually detailed for its size, and may have been part of a larger group. It is believed that objects such as this were used for decorative purposes, although the slight curvature present on the back of the piece suggests that this may have been one component of a larger composition set in plaster.mic. The most important fragment depicts the upper body of a woman (probably a goddess) who draws her cloak over her head, a gesture of modesty and rank, characteristic of the goddess Hera. Fragmentary statue of Ramesses II as a standard bearer ca. 1279-1213 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside In this portion of a temple statue, Ramesses II holds the staff of a sacred standard with his left hand, propping it against his side and shoulder (see 65.114 for a non-royal but complete example of a standard-bearing statue). Crowned with royal or divine figures (or their heads), such standards either represented the king's life-force (ka) or served as portable images of gods. By holding this object, the king drew attention to his diligent performance of temple ritual. The inscriptions on the shaft of the standard and the back pillar state that Ramesses is dedicating a "cult object" to "his father," the god Amun-Re; the king's name is carved inside a cartouche on his belt. The competent handling of the hard material in the modeling of the figure places this statue among the finer works of his reign.See 51.8 for a fragment of the standard.. Standing Female Figure

Funan, Phù Nam in Vietnamese, Fúnán in pinyin, was the Chinese name for an ancient kingdom located around the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam. The name is found in Chinese historical texts describing the kingdom, and its most extensive descriptions are largely based on the report of two Chinese diplomats representing the Wu Kingdom of Nanjing who sojourned in Funan in the mid-3rd century A. D. ; however, the name 'Funan' is not found in any texts of local origin, and it is not known what name the people of Funan gave to their country. What is known about Funan is from Chinese and Cham sources dating from the 3rd to 6th centuries and from archaeological excavations. From the side of archeology, we know that Funan must have been a powerful trading state, as evidenced by the discovery of Roman, Chinese, and Indian goods during excavations at the ancient trading depot of Oc Eo (Vietnamese: Óc Eo) in southern Vietnam. Excavations at Angkor Borei in southern Cambodia have likewise delivered

Statuette of Isis and Horus 664-332 B.C. Late Period Isis name is first attested in the fifth dynasty in the Pyramid texts. She was the wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus, and thus was symbolically mother to the pharaoh. In the Late Period, the popularity of this important goddess dramatically increased. She is nearly always depicted in anthropomorphic form, standing or seated on a throne. This statuette shows the goddess in her most beloved pose, nursing her son Horus (known also as the lactans pose). Other goddesses sometimes nurse Horus or other child gods, but Isis is preeminent among them in this role. She wears the horned crown that by the Late Period she had adopted from the goddess Hathor, and armlets on her upper arms. The abundance of statuettes in this particular pose demonstrate some of the qualities for which Isis was most valued in the first millennium BC: her role as a life-giver and protector. Eye idol ca. 3700-3500 B.C. This type of figurine known as an eye idol, made of stone and having incised eyes, has been excavated at Tell Brak, where thousands were found in a building now called the Eye Temple. They were probably dedicated there as offerings. Many are incised with multiple sets of eyes, others with jewelry, and still others with representations of "children"smaller eyes and body carved on the body of the larger idol. Canopic jar with a human-headed lid 664-525 B.C. Late Period, Saite Canopic jars were made to contain the embalmed viscera removed from the body in the process of mummification. The organs were placed under the protection of the Four Sons of Horus, whose heads form the lids of the jars: Hapy (baboon-headed), Imsety (human-headed), Duamutef (jackal-headed), and Kebehsenuef (falcon-headed). In turn these gods were under the protection of the goddesses Nephthys, Isis, Neith, and Selket, respectively, as the inscriptions on the jars state.This jar was under the protection of Imsety and Isis and would probably have contained the liver. Shabti of Siptah ca. 1194-1188 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside The tomb of Siptah (KV 47) was discovered by Theodore M. Davis 1905, and excavation was continued in 1912. During the two seasons, Davis found hundreds of fragments of Egyptian alabaster. Many of these belonged to between 40 and 50 shabtis inscribed with the names of Siptah. Some were sections of funerary vessels. The rest belonged to at least three sarcophagi and two canopic chests, one belonging to Siptah, the other to a Queen Tiye, who has not yet been identified with certainty.. Shabti of Siptah 550190

Late Period, Kushite-Saite Tjaenwaset belonged to an illustrious family of priests and viziers at Thebes: his father Horsiese, grandfather Horkheb, and great-grandfather Horsiese are named on the statue.Tjaenwaset's front panel depicts him worshiping the Osiris fetish. The prominent position of the motif, which more often occurs on the sides of block statues, may be connected with the role of his son, Pediese the donor of the statue, as a priest of Osiris the Coptite who figures in the complex of Osiris shrines attached to Karnak. These shrines played a part in reenactments of Osiris's resurrection at Karnak temple. From the late New Kingdom onward, the cult of Osiris was increasingly intertwined with every aspect of religious practice..
