. This complex group of three intertwined figures is a reduced copy of the monumental marble sculpture Giambologna made in 1583 for the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, where it stands to this day. The composition is so ingenious that the statuette looks beautiful from all angles. This was quite an artistic challenge for sculptors in the late 16th century.

Bronze statuette of a youth dancing late 4th century B.C. Greek This beautiful bronze captures a moment when the full achievement of Classical art began to be used for the representation of a single, transitory state. The youth is nude except for a crown of myrtle, an attribute of followers of the god Dionysos. His pose no longer dictates one primary view, for his torso and legs assume a true contrapposto, and his downward glance reinforced by the direction of the arms makes a rather tight spiral of the whole composition. There is a perfect congruence among all parts of the figure, but the shifts in direction evident from every angle maintain an effect of instability and impermanence.. Venus early 16th century Southern German The sculptors simplified volumetric approach is remarkable even among German bronzes, in which simplicity and geometry were prized qualities. Exact parallels for the bejeweled goddess have not been found, but the planar treatment of the forms, the reinforced engraving of details such as nipples and navel, the gouging of facial features, and the grooved waves of hair are encountered in various works that originated in Innsbruck, as well as in Nuremberg and Augsburg.[1 The necklace alone does not establish the identity of the goddess. She formerly held an object in her raised right hand and possible steadied something with her lowered left hand, whose thumb has broken. Hercules Skinning the Nemean Lion ca. 1675-1700 Attributed to François Lespingola Hercules subdued the Nemean lion by order of his nemesis King Eurystheus, who ordered all twelve of his famous Labors. He is often shown wrestling with it but seldom if ever skinning it after slaying it. The figure reacting in fright at the side is a water nymph personifying a stream in the neighborhood of Mount Cithaeron, where Hercules performed this first of his Labors. As in all his groups, Lespingola cut the wax model into sections then reassembled them after casting. Here, there are three sections: lion with tree and ground, Hercules, and nymph. The weary hero Hercules stands at rest after completing his Eleventh Labor stealing three golden apples from a tree guarded by nymphs known as the Hesperides. Here, he holds the apples behind his back. Originally his left arm was supported by his club, which was cast separately and is now missing. Bronze statuette of a bearded man late 6th century B.C. Greek Although bearded, this bronze male statuette recalls the most familiar and representative of all Greek Archaic male figures: the kouros, a nude youth. The figure is in fact a variation of the kouros type. Although the stance, with the left foot advanced and both feet on a flat plinth, is characteristic, the traditional kouros was a beardless youth with both hands held at the sides. Most mid-19th-century artists relied on romantic, often inaccurate conceptions of Native Americans, yet some, including Henry Kirke Brown, traveled west hoping to attain firsthand knowledge of their subjects.
