Marble portrait of the co-emperor Lucius Verus A.D. 161-169 Roman This fragmentary head comes from an over-life-sized portrait bust or statue of Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius (r. A.D. 161-180). At the beginning of his reign, Verus was sent to the East to direct military operations against the Parthians, and although the war was concluded successfully in A.D. 166, his returning troops brought back the plague, which ravaged the Empire for several years thereafter. He is compared unfavorably with Marcus Aurelius by the ancient sources, but the portrait shown here has a leonine majesty that gives little indication of his reputation as an idle and dissolute ruler. . At the request of his stepdaughter Salome, Herod ordered the beheading of John the Baptist. She was given his head on a platter. This macabre theme - often called Johannes in disco (John on a plate) - is represented here. The platter, however, is missing. The deathly pale alabaster, the open mouth and tongue and the deep-set eye sockets reinforce the harsh realism.

Colossal portrait head of the emperor Hadrian (AD 117-138). Pentelic marble. Found in Athens. The emperor wears a wreath of oak leaves that end above his forehead in a medallion representing an eagle. The holes in the hoop of the wreath were used to inlay golden leaves. AD130-140.

Date: ca. 1230.This engaging head can be linked to the decoration of the celebrated choir screen of the cathedral at Chartres. The stone screen, erected about 1230 and dismantled in 1763, originally stood at the choir entrance, separating the clergy from the congregation. It was decorated with narrative scenes of the early life of Jesus. This head belongs to the figure of Joseph, the carpenter and spouse of Mary, in the Nativity relief. The photomontage below illustrates its original placement, with Joseph leaning forward to offer a cloth to the resting Mary. Because the cathedral possessed the relic of the Virgin's tunic, narrative reliefs on the choir screen were devoted to her life. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1870.Thompson's mastery of naturalistic portraiture is evident in this posthumous bust of Charles Loring Elliott (1812-1868), a successful New York portrait and genre painter. Here facial features are portrayed with honesty--wrinkles, a crooked nose, and a mole on his forehead individualize Elliott's likeness. Thompson and Elliott shared the distinction of being New York's leading portraitists working in a realist vein, the former in marble and bronze, the latter in paint.
