Date: ca. 540-530 B.C..Obverse, Theseus slaying the MinotaurReverse, men weighing merchandiseDiscovered at Agrigento in Sicily before 1801, this may be the first Greek vase with a potter's signature to have been published in modern Europe. Besides the signature, there is an inscription praising a youth, Klitarchos, as handsome. After Herakles, Theseus is the major hero in Athenian iconography. He was credited with uniting the principalities of Attica and with numerous exploits. Here he kills the Minotaur (part-man, part-bull) in the palace of King Minos on Crete. The artist's concern is to convey the response of each figure, from the deep introversion of the seated man to the gesture of the person behind him. The obverse, depicting a seated man with staff or scepter and phiale and a woman with an oinochoe, presents a solemn scene of offering. Terracotta oinochoe: chous (jug) ca. 420-410 B.C. Attributed to the Meidias Painter The scene depicts two women in festive dress perfuming garments. A stool suspended by chords is piled with folded clothing. On the ground below, there is a pile of wood shavings and twigs from which smoke rises. One woman carefully empties an oinochoe onto the fire. The other woman surveys the "swing" and stands beside a stately chair with a footstool over which more clothes are slung. At the far left is a wreathed boy wearing a himation (cloak). The shape of the vase facilitates the association of the scene with the Anthesteria, a three-day festival held in January/February that celebrated the new wine with the special inclusion of young children, an epiphany of Dionysos, and the ritual marriage of the god with the basilinna, the wife of the chief archon of Athens. Representations of the late sixth and fifth centuries B.C. show Ganymede being carried off by Zeus himself; beginning in the fourth century, Zeus is replaced by an eagle. The figure on the reverse is probably an athlete who is carrying off his prize, a bronze tripod. Greek literature provides numerous references to tripods as prizes and dedications. A representation such as this shows their scale and how such objects were carried. The inscription on the obverse permits different interpretations. An obol was a unit of weight and a coin.. Kalliope, the woman with the oinochoe (jug) and phiale (libation bowl), and Antimachos, the man holding the shield and helmet, define the immediate subject. At the same time, the seated man, Antiochos, who clasps his son's hand, and the general tenor of the representation have direct counterparts on grave stelai. The funerary overtones are emphasized by the palmette on the neckequivalent to the palmette finials on marble stelai.

Terracotta skyphos (deep drinking cup) ca. 470 B.C. Attributed to the Lewis Painter Obverse, DionysosReverse, AriadneDuring the sixth and fifth centuries B.C., Dionysos is usually shown as a mature bearded god wearing a long chiton and cloak. Here, he has a band of cloth and a wreath of vine leaves around his head. He often carries a thyrsos, a fennel stalk topped with ivy leaves. On the skyphos, he pursues his wife, Ariadne. With a single figure on each side, the artist could be expansive with movement and details of drapery.. Pyxis (Container for Personal Objects) 550 BCE-500 BCE Greece. There is a continuous frieze around the body of the vessel consisting of seated draped youths, standing draped females, naked youths with spears, runners and young riders. The draped male figures, seated and standing, all seem to be youths (they wear long chitons and himatia) and hold staffs. The standing women have lost their added white paint. Date: ca. 490 B.C..The centaur Pholos, Herakles, Athena, and HermesOn this vase, the centaur Pholos prepares for a feast, an event whose smell attracts other centaurs and leads to a fierce conflict in which Herakles eventually drives off his assailants. This depiction of Pholos is unusual in that he does not have the expected human abdomen, but instead, his human legs are attached directly to his equine body, giving him the chest of a horse. His attributes in this context are interesting, not least because they are also associated with his sister Artemis. The deer may emphasize his fleetness. The bow becomes more like that of Eros.. Date: ca. 420-400 B.C..The punishment of MarsyasIncomplete though it is, this beautiful work illustrates the South Italian predilection for large vases and the ample surface they provide for decoration. The goddess Athena invented the double flutes but rejected them because her face was disfigured when she played them. The satyr Marsyas mastered the instrument and in time challenged the god Apollo to a contest. Marsyas lost and was flayed for his presumption. On one side of the skyphos, Artemis and Leto, sister and mother of Apollo, face the satyr who leans on a pillar inscribed with his name and holds a large knife. They either lost their way in the king's labyrinthine palace or were consumed by the Minotaur, part man and part bull.
