Roman The emperor was the chief state priest, and many statues show him in the act of prayer or sacrifice, with a fold of his toga pulled up to cover his head as a mark ofpiety. However, this highly idealized head may represent the Genius, or protective spirit, of the living emperor. Traditionally the protective spirit of every Roman household was worshiped at the family shrine. It was represented by a statuette with veiled head holding implements of sacrifice. Rachel Fanny Antonina Le Despencer. Artist: John Bacon the Younger (British, 1777-1859). Culture: British. Dimensions: Overall (with base): 28 × 15 × 11 7/8 in. (71.1 × 38.1 × 30.2 cm). Date: ca. 1820.Antonina apparently spent much of her adult life in an unsuccessful pursuit of the title Baroness Le Despencer. Thus, the inscription on the base was undoubtedly intended to legitimize her claim. Her nom de plume Philopatria, which she adopted for her acclaimed "Essay on Government" of 1808 (she was also the author of anticlerical tracts), appears on the back. Date: 1st century A.D..Copy or adaptation of a Greek work of the 3rd century B.C.This head of a boy with half-opened mouth and tousled hair is typical of many Hellenistic genre works that show satyrs embracing nymphs and young boys engaged in wrestling matches or in such mundane activities as removing a thorn from their foot. Head, Possibly of Empress Flaccilla ca. 380-390 Byzantine The hairstyle and facial features are those of Aelia Flaccilla, wife of Theodosius I. In about 382 she was the first woman officially to be crowned empress since Constantine the Great's mother and his wife far earlier in the century. Flaccilla was described at her death in 387 as "this ornament of the Empire, this zeal for the faith, this pillar of the church."
