Sumerian Of the many legacies left by the ancient civilizations of southern Mesopotamia, the invention of writing is paramount. At the end of the fourth millennium B.C., written language developed in the region, first as pictographs and then evolving into abstract forms called cuneiform. The pictographs, like the ones on this tablet, are called proto-cuneiform and were drawn in the clay with a pointed implement. Circular impressions alongside the pictographs represented numerical symbols. Cuneiform (meaning wedge-shaped) script was written by pressing a reed pen or stylus with a wedge-shaped tip into a clay tablet. Clay, when dried to a somewhat hardened state, made a fine surface for writing, and when fired the records written on it became permanent.Early writing was used primarily as a means of recording

Cylinder seal and modern impression: presentation scene ca. 2000-1750 B.C. Isin-Larsa Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. A photograph taken of Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, Egypt. Philae was initially located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other compounds before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam. The most ancient was a temple for Isis, built in the reign of Nectanebo I during 380-362 BC, the other ruins date from the Ptolemaic Kingdom (282-145 BC), with many traces of Roman work in Philae dedicated to Ammon-Osiris.

Stela Fragment of Pay Adoring Re-Harakhty ca. 1336-1323 B.C. New Kingdom The relief shows Pay, Overseer of the Royal (private) Chambers, raising his hands in adoration before the god Re-Harakhty to his right. The falcon headed deity is wearing a feathered corselet, a short kilt, and holding a was-scepter, while a sun-disk adorned by an uraeus is set above his head. Pay's pleated tunic and its fringed sash are characteristic of the late Eighteenth Dynasty and the Ramesside Period. Above them, part of a winged solar disk can still be seen. Pay served in the royal residence in Memphis and placed his tomb in the elite necropolis in Saqqara nearby. Near Pay's tomb and in its vicinity, other parts of the stela were found .The upper part of the stela shows Pay adoring Re and most probably Atum, and its lower part contains hymns to Re, Atum, Thoth, and Maat, and an autobiographical text, in which Pay speaks of his eloquence and his just righteous. A photograph taken of the Abu Simbel Temple, in Nubia, Southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates to the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. It is a monument to the king and commemorates his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michalowski, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

The parted lips of the figure at the left suggest that he is talking or chanting. The two preserved faces both show signs of aging. These men are probably minor actors in a royal or religious scene. Relief panel ca. 883-859 B.C. Assyrian This panel from the Northwest Palace at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) depicts a winged supernatural figure. Such figures appear throughout the palace, sometimes flanking either the figure of the Assyrian king or a stylized "sacred tree." The reliefs were painted, but today almost none of the original pigment survives. However, the reliefs themselves retain incredible detail, including intricate incised designs on many of the figures clothing.The protective figure on this panel originally stood back to back with another on one side of a doorway, with parallel figures on the other side, so that one pair of figures faced out toward a courtyard and the other into the room. The Museum collection includes fragments of all four figures. The figure is human-headed and faces right, holding in his left hand a plant and raising his open right hand in a beneficent gesture.
