From the Standard of Ur (Peace side). Sumerian artefact (circa 2600 BC) excavated from the royal tomb in the city of Ur in the 1920's. South of what is now Baghdad in Iraq. It is an historical account of ancient warfare, and shows a king, subjects, musicians, soldiers and animals.

Fragment of a Floor Mosaic: Ibex near a Tree, 400s. Byzantium, Northern Syria, Byzantine period, 5th century. Marble tesserae; overall: 85.1 x 94.6 cm (33 1/2 x 37 1/4 in.); mounted: 87.6 x 96.5 cm (34 1/2 x 38 in.). The two mosaic fragments of an ibex and a ram (1969.113) once formed part of a much larger floor mosaic that decorated an early Byzantine church in northern Syria. Displayed upright in the museum context, these mosaic fragments were originally displayed flat, possibly flanking the church's altar to evoke a paradise setting. The mosaic fragment showing the Fall of Adam and Eve (1969.115) is likely to have formed part of the same floor.

Eight Fragments from a Mosaic PavementWhile on the Grand Tour, Lord Charles Kinnaird and Lord George William Russell inspected in 1823 the remains of a large mosaic that had recently been discovered in a vineyard on Monte Rosario, outside Romeís Porta Portuensis gate. Once the floor of a luxurious home, the mosaic comprised concentric bands of multihued figural decoration as well as boldly contrasting ornamental patterns that framed a central scene, which over time had been irreparably damaged by the roots of a tree.The two men purchased and divided the finds. Among the pieces of the mosaic acquired by Lord Kinnaird were eight small panels, six of which depicted still lifes of foodstuffsand objects used in the preparation of meals, while the remain- ing two contained the busts of figures assumed to be personifications of seasons.
