Papyrus of Sitnebsekhtu, Heqanakht Letter IV ca. 1961-1917 B.C. Middle Kingdom Heqanakht was a native of Thebes (present day Luxor) during the early twelfth dynasty. As "ka-servant" of a high official he was responsible for the high official's statue cult and the administration of the land and income that had been endowed to maintain this cult. The letters and accounts written by Heqanakht and one or more scribes on sheets of papyrus were discovered by Museum excavator Herbert E. Winlock in the excavation season of 1921-1922 in the tomb of Meseh, who had a side passage and crypt in the tomb complex of the vizier Ipy, one of the rock cut tombs along the cliff overlooking the temples at Deir el-Bahri. The documents - some still folded, tied and sealed, when found - provide unique insights into the domestic and financial affairs of an average middle class family that lived almost four thousand years ago. This letter was sent to a woman named Sitnebsekhtu by her daughter of the same name.

Ostrakon with an Epistle of Severos, Bishop of Antioch after 508-640 Coptic Ostraca are texts written on broken pottery, which were employed when parchment was unavailable or too expensive. At Epiphanius a large number of ostraca were discovered in the monastery, including in its rubbish heaps; they record biblical verses, legal documents, sermons, financial accounts, school texts, and letters requesting assistance and prayers. Book of the Dead of Djedkhonsuiuefankh Book of the Dead of Djedkhonsuiuefankh, ca. 945-712 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, Sheet: 8 1/16 x 9 3/4 in. (20.5 x 24.7 cm). The Book of the Dead provided the spells the deceased must know and recite to speed the journey into the afterlife. This copy was made for a highly placed priest of the god Amun. As with most other examples of The Book of the Dead, only a selection of spells is included here. On the left are Spells 15 and 17. The illustration depicts Djedkhonsuiuefankh before the sun god Re-Hor-akhty. The columns of text in the illustration reveal the gods greeting to the deceased and the deceaseds name and genealogy.
