This vignette comes from a papyrus that belonged to an official named Ankhefenmut. He is shown here in a position of adoration before the god Re-Horakhty. Although scenes depicting private individuals in the presence of a god are known from as early as the Middle Kingdom, they did not become popular until the Ramesside Period. Manuscript of the Qur'an Manuscript of the Qur'an, A.H. 889/1484 C.E. Ink, opaque watercolors, and gold on paper, Paper: 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 in. (9.5 x 9.5 cm). The patron who commissioned this manuscript of the Quran spared no expense—from the first few folios, replete with lush illumination, to the binding, elaborately engraved with the Chinese-inspired lotus blossoms and cloud bands common to the art of the Timurid dynasty in Iran and Central Asia. The second and third pages displayed here feature intricate vegetal ornamentation in gold on a background of cobalt blue, both materials prized for their value and beauty. The right-hand page contains the Arabic text of the Qurans first sura, or chapter, which plays a part in many Muslims daily lives; the following chapter begins on the left. The script is known as ghubar, which literally means “dust,” because the letters were thought to be as minute as grains of powder. Receipt for a Grain Loan Aramaic. Receipt for a Grain Loan, December, 402 B.C.E. Papyrus, ink, mud, a: Glass: 14 15/16 x 16 1/4 in. (38 x 41.2 cm). In the fifth century B.C.E., Egypts Elephantine Island was home to Egyptians, Persians, and Jews. This document comes from the archive of a Jewish family whose first language was Aramaic rather than Egyptian. It states that in December 402 B.C.E., Ananiah, son of Haggai, borrowed two monthly rations of grain from Pakhnum, son of Besa, an Aramaean with an Egyptian name. This receipt would have been kept by Pakhnum and returned to Ananiah when he repaid the loan. No interest is charged on the loan, but there is a penalty for failing to repay it on the appointed date.
