Relief block with the names of Amenemhat I and Senwosret I ca. 1962-1952 B.C. Middle Kingdom On this relief, King Amenemhat I (left) wears a crown with tall feathers, while King Senwosret I (right) has a crown with rams horns, little of which survives. The relief was originally part of a block that separated two rooms in a temple dedicated to King Amenemhat I. In these scenes, he was shown as a living king addressed by his son Senwosret I, who was also depicted as a ruling pharaoh. Temple of Edfu located on the west bank of the Nile River between Esna and Aswan, with a population of approximately sixty thousand people. Edfu is the site of the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus and an ancient settlement, Tell Edfu. The town is known for the major Ptolemaic temple, built between 237 BC and 57 BC, into the reign of Cleopatra VII.

Votive stela with figures of Goddesses Taweret and Mut of Isheru ca. 1390-1352 B.C. New Kingdom The two goddesses shown here were associated with women. Although they face one another, in the conventions of Egyptian art they are meant to be seen as standing side by side, facing the viewer. Taweret appears on the left, identified by the inscription in front of her as "Taweret, mistress of the sky." On her head she wears a sun disk and cow's horns. Although Taweret herself is not usually associated with the sky, this feature, and her epithet, are probably borrowed from Hathor, the goddess of femininity and love, indicating that here Taweret represents the female sex itself. In keeping with her usual role as a protective force for women during and after childbirth, her protruding belly suggests pregnancy. The image on the right is identified by its inscription as "Mut the great, mistress of Isheru." This goddess was the wife of Amun and embodied the principle of motherhood; her name itsel

Relief panel ca. 883-859 B.C. Assyrian This panel from the Northwest Palace at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) depicts a winged supernatural figure. Such figures appear throughout the palace, sometimes flanking either the figure of the Assyrian king or a stylized "sacred tree." The reliefs were painted, but today almost none of the original pigment survives. However, the reliefs themselves retain incredible detail, including intricate incised designs on many of the figures clothing.The figures are supernatural but do not represent any of the great gods. Rather, they are part of the vast supernatural population that for ancient Mesopotamians animated every aspect of the world. They appear as either eagle-headed or human-headed and wear a horned crown to indicate divinity. Both types of figure usually have wings. Cylinder seal and modern impression: confronted upright lion and griffin before a seated figure ca. 13th century B.C. Cypriot Although engraved stones had been used as early as the seventh millennium B.C. to stamp impressions in clay, the invention in the fourth millennium B.C. of carved cylinders that could be rolled over clay allowed the development of more complex seal designs. These cylinder seals, first used in Mesopotamia, served as a mark of ownership or identification. Seals were either impressed on lumps of clay that were used to close jars, doors, and baskets, or they were rolled onto clay tablets that recorded information about commercial or legal transactions. The seals were often made of precious stones. Protective properties may have been ascribed to both the material itself and the carved designs. Seals are important to the study of ancient Near Eastern art because many examples survive from every period and can, therefore, help to define chronological phases. Often pres

Furniture plaque carved in relief with a winged, falcon-headed sphinx ca. 9th-8th century B.C. Assyrian This exquisitely carved plaque was found in a large storeroom at Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was probably used to store tribute and booty collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. Bound on the upper and lower edges by a border of parallel lines, a striding sphinx that combines a lions body with what is probably the head of a falcon is carved in very low relief. The inclusion of several Egyptian elements including the nemes cloth (a royal, pleated headdress), a patterned apron with a pleated tassel, and the atef crown, an embellished version of the crown of Upper Egypt with an ostrich plume on each side, horizontal rams horns underneath, and the unusual addition of rising uraei (mythical, fire-spitting serpents), suggest that this piece can be attributed to the Phoenician style.
