Tomb chapel of Raemkai: South wall of the entrance corridor. Dynasty: Dynasty 5. Date: ca. 2446-2389 B.C..THE ENTRANCE CORRIDORScenes decorating the entrance thicknesses of Old Kingdom tombs often included a movement of people and objects into the interior. The entrance corridor here is decorated on both sides with scenes in several registers. At the very top, parts of two ships can be seen. Only the hulls of ships are preserved, but the absence of rowing oars and the position of the steering oars show that both boats are sailing westward into the tomb, and thus into the realm of the dead. In the registers below, an enshrined statue of the deceased is dragged on a sled over ground moistened by a man pouring water from a jar. The inscription reads: "accompanying the statue to its chamber." In the third register offering bearers march into the tomb. This ancient Assyrian relief shows the god Bel-Merodach (also spelled Marduk), armed with the thunderbolt, doing battle with the tumultuous Tiamat (figure on left). Marduk was all-powerful, a healer, and mediator for humans. Marduk was called upon to save humanity from evil. Tiamat was the symbol of chaos. The struggle between Marduk and Tiamat was a favorite theme for ancient Assyrian artists. It was drawn by Faucher-Gudin to accompany text in a book on ancient Egypt and the Levant by Gaston Maspero. The actual bas-relief is from Nimrud and is preserved in the British Museum.

Advertisement for Muller Stoneware Manufactory. Artist: Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier (French, Paris 1856-1909 Neuilly). Culture: French, Ivry. Dimensions: 36 × 25 3/8 in. (91.4 × 64.5 cm). Date: 1897.Toward the close of the nineteenth century, the humble medium of stoneware--grès in French--won the attention of sculptors because of its earthy honesty and its capacity for reproducing the subtlest contours. The trade in stoneware sculptures grew so promising that the large firm of Emile Muller chose to advertise them along with the tiles and moldings for which it was known. This relief has chunks of masonry plaster on its back and must have been walled-in, possibly in Muller's showroom, as a sort of three-dimensional poster. In turning to Charpentier, the firm obtained the services of the most gifted anatomist among Art Nouveau sculptors. The olive-hued relief shows a remarkable tension between the tousled, sinewy youth and the bands of lettering. The boy holds a bulky tile while pro
