Plaque carved in relief with figure fighting a lion ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Assyrian This trapezoidal ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a male figure, barefoot and dressed in an Egyptian-style kilt and beaded collar, in combat with a rampant lion. The figure wears a short Egyptian wig and a headdress that resembles the Egyptian double crown. He holds a plant stalk with a lily blossom in his right hand and grasps the lions foreleg with the same hand, while driving a spear through its abdomen with his left, holding the spear awkwardly behind his own body. Plant stalks topped with lily blossoms grow behind each of the two combatants, and one with an additional branch topped by a bud grows in the field between the two. The lion seems to rest a paw on the lily blossom, or perhaps on the shaft of the spear. Its mouth is open in a

A photograph taken of the Abu Simbel Temple, in Nubia, Southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates to the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. It is a monument to the king and commemorates his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michalowski, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

Furniture plaque carved in relief with lion-headed figure ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Assyrian This ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a lion-headed figure who resembles the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet, though this figure is shown as male. Before him is a monkey seated on a lotus flower eating or holding food, another motif adapted from Egyptian art. Together, the two seem to refer to the Egyptian story of the Eye of Re, in which the fierce lion goddess is pacified and peace and prosperity return to the land. Carved ivory pieces such as this were widely used in the production of elite furniture during the early first millennium B.C. They were often inlaid into a wooden frame using joinery techniques and glue, and could be overlaid with gold foil or inlaid to create a dazzling effect of gleaming surfaces and bright colors. A photograph taken of the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut (the Chapelle Rouge) constructed initially as a barque shrine during the reign of Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt and ruled from approximately 1479 to 1458 BC. Although it had been demolished and parts were reused in antiquity, following rediscovery, the chapel has been reconstructed using its original materials. Its original location is thought to have been in the central court of the temple of Amun at Karnak, near Thebes.

Relief panel ca. 883-859 B.C. Assyrian This panel from the Northwest Palace at Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) depicts a winged supernatural figure. Such figures appear throughout the palace, sometimes flanking either the figure of the Assyrian king or a stylized "sacred tree." The reliefs were painted, but today almost none of the original pigment survives. However, the reliefs themselves retain incredible detail, including intricate incised designs on many of the figures clothing.The protective figure on this panel originally stood back to back with another on one side of a doorway, with parallel figures on the other side, so that one pair of figures faced out toward a courtyard and the other into the room. The Museum collection includes fragments of all four figures. The figure is human-headed and faces left, holding in his left hand a bucket and in his right hand a cone whose exact nature is unclear. Relief panel showing two baboons offering the wedjat eye to the sun god Khepri, who holds the Underworld sign 400-200 BC Late Period-Ptolemaic Period In this scene, two baboons offer wedjat eyes to Khepri, the newborn sun represented by a beetle. In his front legs Khepri holds a disk with a star, which is the sign for the Duat or Underworld, and beneath him there is a sun with rays. The baboons are similar to the baboons often shown heralding the sunrise by dancing and screeching, but here they seem to be associated with Thoth by the wedjat (eye) signs they hold, and perhaps also by the shen-rings they wear on their heads that resemble the moon disk and horns often worn by the Thoth baboon.The baboons here are depicted with ears (one is worn away) and with fanning fingertips, the latter characteristic of the 30th dynasty.
